Getting boned by radiator shop

Will a Md,M radiator cr9557 (oem 351798R92, 352629R92)work on a 400? The correct part cr9548 (361416R93)is the 400 rad.. The rad. guy told me the rad. that I brought in, off my 400, was orig. off a Sm (L47 BMI-443 351797r91) He told me it was junk like all of you predicted. He said he did some research, and got me the rad. that is right for me. I assumed he was ordering me the one for a 400. I found out when I got it home he ordered an M,Md rad.. I'm ------! Why I asked him. Told me a 400 wouldn't work on my 400 since this Sm was already on and the shaft fit through. I said yeh! but the shaft was low fitting, and the steering box is adjustable anyway. This is an antique and I want the oem, I told him. I could not on the phone get him to order me the oem. At the end of the ------ off discussion I'm supposed to try and see if it works. Told them if it works I will buy donuts. If it don't they will take it back. Why not just get what I friggen want, oem., and make the tractor original. Y O U GUYS WERE RIGHT! but I needed a radiator....Tim P.S. this new rad. also had a way bigger size fill cap, and now I have to find if I can get one 7psi.

I'd guess that it will fit. Like they said before the new ones are universal fit. I didn't know there were different radiators in an M vs SM.

THere is trouble in river city. The way bigger fill cap is a non pressurized radiator for a 1942 or older (best guess) it might fit in the hole it will not hold pressure, it is way wrong, and will boot have the Number of tube rows needed for an engine with 1/3 more HP. The bigger cap is not available in any pressure because it is a non pressure style, and no one even makes a cap for it. There is no solution with that radiator. Even if a different neck was put on it it would go bad from flexing in short order. Just no way. Sorry. I think Rusty Farmall Sells radiators. Jim

But unfortunately the radiator shop is "right" It will fit the hole and work when it leaves the shop...

If thats a new radiator they ordered for you, I didn't know anyone made a low pressure one anymore. Makes me wonder what you had to start with. If the radiator shop was wrong about the radiator being for a M, SM theres the possibility the 400 had a late model IH replacement radiator with a smaller cap than the standard pressure type one. If the radiator you removed had the fill cap above a non molested grill, it wasn't a SM one. If the cap was above a unmolested grill hood to start with, I would say you had a 400 one to start with. Did the radiator you removed have a bigger hole for the steering shaft to pass through than the replacement?
What I'm getting at is you could have a radiator with a bigger cap now and its still not a low pressure radiator. If you have a low pressure opening on the radiator fill the gas cap is the same size. Does the gas cap look the same size as the radiator opening?
Bottom line is a radiator for a M or SM is going to leave the fill cap below the grill hood level. Some aftermarket radiators put a longer neck on the top to come above the hood. Original IH 400 radiators used a taller top radiator tank with a standard length neck.

I'm with you guys. I'm still taking all this in. I'm starting to think I should make them take this thing back... I'm going to work on the no pressure theory and see exactly if the rad. even can get a 7psi gas cap. I'm taking in all your advice, and using IT. Thank you for being there for the new guy. Some day I will be Red too.

2 replacements listed in parts right here on this site. I bought cores from YT and was pleased with them.

The non pressure radiator has no lip inside the filler opening for a cap to seal on. It uses the same type of cap as the fuel tank.

There are two different size openings for pressurized radiators. The original M style uses a cap with a 2" seal. The cap will have an arm attached to it.

The later IH tractors used a cap with a 1 1/2" seal. The IH cap for that style was squared off. There are also two different depths of sealing lips.

If you look up the radiator for a 400 on this site you can see the difference in the top tank and filler neck length.

If you want OEM then quit screwing around trying to make something you know is not right fit.

Take it back. Tell him it won't work. Find a different source for the correct radiator.

Good news! They got their radiator back and OEM is coming home soon. This goes to show that men can argue and still work things out. Time and time again you run into somebody that has the ability to change their words and except what they have made up is true. This can be scary when you have alot of money involved. Thanks to you guys I got it together and confronted what I want and expect as a first time customer. This isn"t drama class, so now back to simple tractor talk. ...Thanks Tim

Tim, I'm glad it worked out for you as that was the only solution. I looked in a catalog I have and the fill neck issue was very apparent between the two radiators. I felt all along that it was a no brainer but sometimes solutions are hard to achieve. In my case, I have two excellent repair shops in the small community in which I live here in Missouri. One is the radiator shop which has been in the same family since 1917. The older gentleman that does the repairs on radiators is deaf and can't hear a word but if he can see your lips knows every word you say. The other is the generator and auto electric shop and the person there also has a disability but he really knows his generators, starters and alternators. Both businesses are just a pleasure to deal with and when I see these issues on the forum I just see how blessed I am with the folks I deal with on the same matters. Glad it worked out, Hal.
