reversing a M

Someone else will have more details, as I haven't done it. But you will need a different transmission cover, and probably follow the same process as was used for a cotton picker tractor.

You need a low drum cotton picker rear frame lid with the shifting forks. When changing the lids, flip the ring gear and differential. That's it except for changing steering, pedals, throttle, and seat.

If you can't get a cotton picker lid, you can use the lid from a 400, 450, 560 although one of the steering post holes will be missing. Other holes like the battery box holes may be missing as well, but a flat plate adaptor could be fabricated. Take the M shifting forks and rotate the yokes by cutting and welding.

Best to just buy the complete low drum cotton picker that has not been converted to forward operation.

Forget to mention that, if using a 400-560 lid, you will have to drill and tap four 3/8 bolt holes. You will also have to drill the pockets for the detent balls. The bosses will be there but not machined.

'39 lid on left. 560 lid on right.

I have worked on an M that was reversed by flipping the differential assembly and then cutting off and adding about 2 inches to the shift forks and using a spacer between the deck cover and rear frame.

Pete,

Wardner has it correct. The hardest part is finding the reverse top and shift forks. Then it is just a matter of removing the top, flipping the differential, and replacing the original top with the reversed top. Wardner mentioned that the 400, 450, and 560 tops have the additional shift hole and are cast for the reverse forks but are not machined or drilled. Actually some of them were machined and drilled but there is no way to tell without looking under the top. Most were not drilled and machined.

Wow, this sounds like a lot of work just to go in reverse. Glad I don't own an "M". Sounds like backing up is quite a chore with these old gals......

Sorry, had to do it.

Why won't a high drum picker work? Or just too expensive?

The high drum cotton picker is an elevated tractor. Its reverse operation is made possible by using a pair of gear-drive drop-boxes. The rear frame lid is either a W6 or M item (I don't know but probably M).

They are converted to standard operation by removing the drop-boxes and sliding on the wheels. They don't need the two hole reversing lid.

Gotcha, I forgot about the gear drive stuff. I was just thinking about all the reverse operation stuff shifter setup etc.

Thanks for all the information, what I have is a Md with all the cotton picker parts I know the drops will reverse it when they are installed and I want to make it run forward a cheap high crop so to speak. I have seen pics and I think they look good. That being said does anybody have the parts for sale? And thanks again Pete

Pete,

Look at the thread "Cotton Picker to Sprayer" in the "General IH" section on the "Red Power" forum for more ideas. It is on page three now, 3/10.
