I have a 39 M that has pretty jerky clutch. When letting the clutch out it seems to grab very quick with letting the off the clutch very little. How much free play should there be in the pedal? Looking at an old parts book it looks like there was a different clutch in the early M's versus the later. Can you change a clutch in these with the belly pump out?

I think there was only a 11" and a 12" clutch. The 12" was very late. You should have 1 1/8" freeplay. Obviously adjust to that to start with. They generally are really grabby if they have oily gunk on them.

Okay, I'll get the free play adjusted. This thing has been
sitting for about 25 years and was used for pulling prior to
that. Things could be kind of rusty.

If the belly pump is out, it would be easy to remove the belly cover and take a look inside to see how much oil / grease is around. You wont see the plates, but can see the throw out bearing assembly and shaft spline. If it looks oily or rusty you may have to take the clutch out and clean it up.

Yes, you can change the clutch without splitting the tractor. It is a dirty job because you are laying under the tractor and all that dirt, dust, dried up grease, etc. will get in your face, but hey, getting dirty is what it's all about.
