Farmall 450 Tranmission cleaning

Hello Farmall world.

Specs:
Farmall 450, GAS, Independant PTO, Torque Amplifier

It was brought to my attention that the inside of my tractor needs some cleaning. Pictured my Gear shifters. Looks very bad, and thick. Someone mentioned Kerosene to clean out first then add in the new oil.

Can some one explain this to me a little more? All the little details are appreciated. Do I run the engine a little with the kerosene?? I would think not, but... Do I drain the old oil first, then add the kerosene??

I am also in the process of changing my Battery box, Old one rusted through and only the hydrolic metal lines were keeping it on the tractor. Any "easy" way to get the bolts out. there are 5 of them. I tried chipping away the rust and such, but I can vaguely see a top of the bolts. Grind off and try an easy out? Heat up with torch, not sure how easy that would be because it is the frame...??

On my H that I bought the tranny and rear was about half full of water and sludge. I drained the old fluid out--let it drain overnight. Then I put in a couple gallon of deisel fuel. Then started it and drove it around to stir it up some then drained it and added new fluid. You may have to that a couple of times.
 
The rear end
Use diesel instead of kero. It's cheaper. Not sure about running it in a TA tractor though. I wouldn't think it would hurt it, but I would look into it. The sludge and crap has to hurt the TA more. Usually these tranny are low on oil so you wouldn't have to drain any. If you do drain some drain out about 3 gallons and fill it up with diesel. I would dump it right in that gear shift hole. Run it around and get it warm. You wont burn anything up. Then drain it. You could dump in five more gallons and run it some more if you are not satisfied. This would let you know how clean you got it.

For the bolts
Weld nuts to the top of the bolts. It does two things. First it gives you something to turn rather than a junk bolt. Second it heats the bolt allowing it to come out easier. I would do that long before I tried an easy out/reverse drill bit.
 
Here is what I would do if it were mine. I would drain the oil and then add about 5 gallons of diesel fuel. Drive it around a little while and drain it. As cruddy as your shift rails look I would take the deck off the transmission and see what everything else looks like. You might need to scrape some of the gunk loose and use an old paint brush with solvent or diesel fuel to clean things up. Those shift rails show signs of a lot of moisture. I question what condition some of the bearings might be in.

I used a water fire extinguisher filled with diesel to "wash out" my H. :roll: Don't pick that on up not knowing what was in it!?!
 
OK, sounds like Diesel is the way to go. I'll probably drain what's in it, hopefully there is some type of fluid. Add in 3-4 gallons, run for a little while then drain. if it looks pretty bad. Redo again, and drain.

Once I drain it for the last time, Do I need to let it sit with the plug out for a while to let it air out?? If so how long is long enough?

If you drain it completely I would fill it up to at least half of the capacity, full would be better. This will let it splash around and reach more places. With that it would be a $50 or so cleaning job with current prices.

You don't need to air it out. Diesel fuel will dissolve into the hytran easily. I would let it drain completly.
