More H bolster Questions

When I removed bolster shaft, there was a spacer below the sector gear. Is that supposed to be there?
Also there were two shims between top of sector gear and castle nut. Are they needed?
Also, does the spacer next to the thrust bearing go below it or above it? Mine was below it when disassembled. Sorry, don't have an H parts manual.

CNH parts has all the H parts diagrams online. Just go there and look it up and you never need to spend the money on a parts book.

Thanks for the tip. Just looked at the diagram online. Shows no spacer below or shims above the sector gear, so I guess I'll delete those. I would think that a spacer below the sector would keep it from bottoming out on the splines.

When I am working on a tractor, my parts book is in the shop. Much easier to page thru a book than to get greasy fingers all over a computer, the diagrams are clearer too. I usually put the pages in plastic also. I use the web site when I am inside, and to answer questions on this forum about tractors I don't have (when I do that I am usually wrong). Can also print out sheets, but I usually don't. You can't beat a hard copy. My opinion only.

No spacer below sector gear unless you have excessive up and down movement with everything in place and securely tightened. That gear needs to be very tight on the splines. The only time up and down play bothers is if you have a wide front because with the narrow front the weight is always on the thrust bearing.

I was given a set of JenSales manuals as a gift and they have TERRIBLE picture quality. IMO the website if far superior. I like the website for all the reasons you dislike it. I like to print a page and take it outside with me. I then take notes when I take stuff apart so I know how it goes back together and other valuable info. If it gets greasy or messy I can toss it. I have noticed the pictures are still ultra clear even when you blow them up. I just did this with my MD wiring diagram so I could see where the wires "should" be routed...still no signs of a beside the seat battery box

Unless you have a early H there"s a spacer that goes between the thrust bearing and the large part of the bolster shaft. Cup shaped side goes down. Not unusal for there to be one or two thin washers between the nut and the steering gear. Didn't think to say the thrust bearing has a smaller ID on one half. Can be hard to see by eye. Smaller ID side goes down. Lots of them get installed the other way.

Thanks to all for replies. Everything seems good to go. I drove the lower bushing in too far, but was able to remove it without damage. I will reposition and drill a new grease hole in it. Should have been more careful.
