Propane help for Larry McDonald

Larry is asking for help and advise on "how to start and operate a IH 300 U LP"

I'll start with what I know, (and have been told) Hopefully others will offer some help as I am NO expert. I need to service one tomorrow after work and I'll take a few photos.

Larry operating a propane tractor is about the same as operating any other tractor. The only difference is the fuel source. Turn on the gas, turn the key and drive away.
It doesn't matter which way your tank is mounted it will have the same components as the one in the photo. Two valves with lines going thru a filter, a regulator, then to the carb.. One is a vapor valve and one is a liquid valve. I was told liquid is required to "have enough fuel for sustained power operations" My 300 liquid valve leaks so I disconnected it, capped it off 3 years ago and have never used it or needed it.
The yellow cap is a dust cap on the fill port. This is where the line/hose goes to hook up the service line. The other is a vent valve. This is opened to vent pressure while the tank is being filled. Then there is a fuel level gauge and a safety valve or disk.
There was much discussion in the other thread about there being serious dangers and waste during servicing. I find this NOT to be true. As with any fuel there is always danger and respect is required. This fuel just happens to be compressed to a liquid and is several hundred degrees below zero. The danger and waste apply when you are servicing from a home tank which is designed to service a gas to a home, NOT a liquid to a tank. There is a difference in design.
I leased my farm tank for a year or so then bought it from the propane company that services it. They said they had many extras and were more than happy to sell me a one.

I have not torn into a carb yet, only made a few minor adjustments. My fuel gauge does not work and I intend to take the tank off one day to have that repaired. My propane company tells me they should be able to fix it. I thought about having the tank inspected at the same time.
I did open up the fuel filter canister, and that was a mistake. The filter was squeaky clean, and I could not locate a new filter. The can was hard as heck to get sealed once opened.

Also I have been told that an "IMPCO J STYLE" regulator will work as a replacement but I have not tried it.

There are thousands of propane forklifts in use today. I'll bet there is a good reason so many and I would also bet that many of those parts will work on a farmall. (a manual might come in handy as well)

hope this helps..
it is late and I am giddy tired..

Larry wants to know how to start his "new-to-him" LP tractor.

This begs the question: Have you seen it running? If so, turn on the vapor valve, move the throttle half way, turn the ignition key, and probably play with the choke. Not much different than a gasoline engine. If you are going to work it hard, turn on the liquid valve.

If the ignition is OK and it won't start, you are either out of fuel or the regulator is faulty. There is a small likelihood that the shutdown diaphragm in the carb is faulty but that is your lowest priority troubleshooting step. The diaphragm shuts down the fuel flow when there is no intake manifold vacuum.

Check to see if anyone has been wrenching on the regulator. If so, someone else (or the IH manual) will need to assist you.

I have a W-400LP but have only started it half a dozen times and refueled it once. I had to replace the regulator after not running the tractor for many years. The internals were heavily corroded.
