I want to put a alternator on my 47A

My 1947 farmall A does not have a alternator (just uses the batt to start) I want to fit a alt on it any suggestions as to what alt to use?
I know it will have to be wired for a single wire system any help on this one??

"I know it will have to be wired for a single wire system"

HOW have you determined it will HAVE to be wired as a "single wire system"?

A "three wire system is doable and has advantages.

The "3-wire" system is EASY to do and CHEAP... you can use a $10 or $20 recycling yard GM alternator or the same wiring setup with a smaller and easier to mount Hitachi or Mitsu unit.

You are just getting into a can of worms the Farmall A sure doesent need 12v just get your system working this forum is full of 12v conversions most were not needed.

why would you want 12 volt on a little tiny engine like that? they spin over good on 6 volt . this is just a case of monkey see monkey do. makes no sense to me at all. what is your reason to go 12 volt? buy a 6 volt batt. and if your charging if not fix it and dont blame it on 6 volt. 12 volt sure beats the shi- out of those starters.

The only monkey I see here is the one that flunked English and has a closed mind to anything someone wants to do. When the cost of an alternator and 12v battery is less than the cost of replacing a generator and 6v battery it makes perfect sense. Of course if you have a restored trailer queen instead of a working tractor that's another story. BTW 12v will not damage a 6v starter unless you are really stupid about starting a tractor.

Go on change to 12volt you will never be sorry I don't care what they say. If 6v pos. ground was so great why did they change from it. You will have much less trouble with 12 volt and I know that for a fact.

I have done both 1 and 3 wire alternators on equipment. I prefer the 1 wire. The only negative I have is you have to rev the motor to "excite" the charging circuit. Cost is not an issue because I usually buy a new alternator when I install one. Cost is about the same 1 or 3 wire if buying new.

Good luck!

Got 47 farmall B with IH over size pistons. Starts on 6 volt great. Generator went bad replaced with a 6 volt (one wire) alternator And did not have to change any thing else.
