wrong radiator

Took my 400 radiator to the shop. In 3 days he called me and said it"s beyond what could be repaired. I got a surprise when he also told me the radiator I brought him belongs in a Super M. It seemed to fit very well and the sheet metal fastened to it right. He said he could get me a brand new one for a 400 for 375. plus 35. shipping. If I remember correct I think he told me a 400"s rad. was smaller. What"s your inputs on this? Thanks again in advance...really appreciate all the help. Don"t say it enough.

I think Rusty Farmall sells them. THis sight might sell them as well. There is little difference between those two radiators (IIRCC). Jim

Now thinking more, I did wonder what's up with the fan shroud being broke and missing at the bottom and cut up the way it is. Although it seemed the long four bolts did go in the right fastening holes and bolted up what looked correct.

You should never let a radiator shop diagnose your radiator. Especially the old ones that were ruggedly built. They know that you know it is old and play on that awareness. The standard business model for those guys is to condemn everything after a sufficient delay while they "evaluate' it. Some may even poke holes in it to "prove" it is junk.

Those scumbags could install the outlet plugs, attach the test air, and sink it in their tank while you observe everthing. It wouldn't take more than two minutes after you enter their shop (most of which are ratholes).

They have lost sight of the fact that the customer wants a repair rather than some imported piece of crap. They are simply radiator brokers rather than service providers. Feck them. Do your own diagnosis and mark the spot(s) you want repaired or do it yourself. I'm sure there are on-line how-to sites for radiator repair.

Think I mentioned in one of your other posts that the top tank on the top side of the radiator cores are taller on a 400 and 450 than a M,SM radiator is. Some aftermarket radiators are a semi fit all. They make the radiators the same size then just install a long neck in the ones for 400, 450 to extend high enough.
M, SM, 400, 450 radiators all have the same basic dimensions below the top tank. But there may or may not be differences in sheet metal hole placement, bolt size or threads, steering shaft hole size, core row numbers and size. and a few small things. Also a lot of M radiators have 2 core rows. 400 have a least 3 rows. IH made a lot of different part number radiators for use on M through 450 so its not uncommon to find no two exactly alike.

That is kind of where the shop in Elkhorn, WI is heading. I have heard from MANY people that took a radiator in there and all they wanted to do was recore it. All you wanted was the leak soldered/brazed back up, not a new radiator. I went in there to see if they could acid dip my MD starting tank and they don't even have an acid bath anymore. He said it was too much money to get rid of the waste. I asked what they did now. He said they pull the end caps off and shove a rod down the inside of the cores. I think I can see why they are recoring so many radiators...

IIRC was accurately explained. www.urbandictionary.com Will help you out with most of your common forum abreviations.

Do not go to a radiator shop that is dishonest. A thief can rob you while you watch. Do not give your business to one you cannot trust. It is just like trusting your wife so you do not have to check on her.
