have a farmall m that has the 6 volt ingnitor on it. had to put a 8 volt battery in it to get it to start. anyway that was 4-5 yrs ago and the battery died, so i have decided to switch it over to 12 volt and be done with it. i have a one wire alt that came on another tractor, and a 12 volt battery from one of my deeres that i replaced the batterys last fall, that i can use. questions are wiring the one wire, and will i need the ignitor or should i just put the points back in? also will i need a resistor or differant coil if i go to the 12 volt ignitor.

With an ignitor, the best option is a higher energy coil. Follow the ignitor install directions. using the 6v igniter might work if you used the ballast resistor, but no guarantees on the method as It would be a risk to the ignitor.
The one wire hooks up to the load side of the amp meter (not the side hoked to the starter switch) Jim
