Why did MW make a Farmall govenor?

I looked on my H and it doesn't appear to have an M&W govenor. I'm curious, why did M&W make a govenor to replace the IH govenor? What were the advantages?

M&W made a lot of "whoopee" parts for many different brands of tractors. The governor kit was just one of many. The aftermarket horsepower market was wide open back then, and M&W filled it very nicely.

same reason people make aftermarket parts today, to make money. Most M&W part are as good or better than stock and prized by collectors.

The M&W gov has less droop than the stock IHC gov. Means as the engine becomes loaded down the gov opens the throttle quicker. This makes the tractor feel "snappier" under changing load conditions - ie. like it has more power.

The M&W however does NOT increase horsepower. Once it's wide open (ie the engine's fully loaded) the M&W offers no advantage whatsoever.

Incidentally I much prefer the action of the M&W gov over stock. I have a pair of Super M's, one with an M&W, the other stock. The M&W tractor just feels peppier under part load operation.

How can you tell the difference? My H is really snappy..if it goes under a load it throttles up real quick snappy like. I don't think the gov spring is bad, because it feels different than my M did with a weak spring.

Feel the difference? No idea. I have never driven/worked two close enough in time to compare them.

Id them, check out the thread I posted yesterday with pictures of my two setups.

Just to add, the IH govenor was not a long life unit, weights and pins wore out with rather low hours. When the weights wear the sensitivity drops off really fast. When I dynoed those tractors it was usually a govenor kit to get them up to snuff. The kit was pretty reasonably priced but the weights by them selves were always very expensive. Later years they got to be terrilbly high priced for all gov parts. Last M govenor I rebuilt at the dealership took $500 just for the parts. Needless to say I found different ways to repair them.

IH offered different governors for those engines for industrial and power unit models. They would have had the same benefits as the MW if installed on a farm tractor. I wonder if parts for those are still available as they weren't so common.
