Oil filters on H and M's

Just wondering - my 43 H takes the short oil filter while my 43 M takes the long filter and I believe I've seen them swapped on other tractors - wondering why there were 2 sizes. It would make sense to me to have the larger one on everything as it would have more filter capacity. Its not like there is huge cost difference.

Actually, your '43 H SHOULD use the same filter as your M. I think it was something like 1946 when the switch was made to the short filter on the H, but the canisters will easily interchange. The short filter is priced at about $3 less than the tall filter.

Nowadays, it's cheaper for the manufacturer to have one filter to fit multiple machines. I can't believe it was any different back in 1943.

Nah, the different filters was a visual thing. The big filter looked out of proportion on the H, so designers switched to a shorter canister to make the tractor look better.

Everybody has an opinion. Mine is that the switch to the smaller filter was a significant cost saving decision.
