Gettin that 826 running right!-help please!!

I had the injec. pump on my 826 overhauled a year ago. After a short time i noticed it was getting fuel in the crankcase, because the front seal on the pump shaft was leaking. I got it back today, put it back on exactly the way i took it off. The guy at the shop said he didnt turn the shaft at all or do anything to mess the timing up. I got the whole system bled out after putting on new fuel filters, and the only way i get get it to run is with the fuel shut-off cable pulled half way out...then it smokes like crazy and will only run on a real low idle.if i push the cable back down in the run position,it will stall immidiatly. if i pull it ALL the way out it will stall.. It wont take any throttle either... If its out of time it will have to be re-timed....just not real good on pumps and hoping its something simple first.... thanks in advance for any help!!!

Hi John, I assume your 826 has the German D-358 Diesel engine. I have never worked on the 6 cyl version, only the 3 and 4 cyl versions but the parts are the same except for number of cylinders.

First question, did you loosen the 3 cap screws on the injection pump drive gear? If you loosened these screws, I hope you marked the exact location, if not you will have to do a static timing on the injection pump.

If you did not loosen the cap screws then the injection pump is probably 180 degrees out of time. The pump only turns at 1/2 the engine rpm so to keep the pump in time, if the drive shaft is turned then the pump drive shaft has to be turned 2 revs to keep the timing.
So to correct this problem you will have to remove the pump and turn the drive shaft 1 rev and re-install the pump.
