Battery cable tips needed

Are there rules of thumb for how long of cables to make? I measured out my cable lengths with an extension cord at 44" but they sure are expensive to mess up the job. I have the switch on tank support setup. There would be a short hot from the bat and a long hot to the starter.
Any tips are appreciated.

Only two rules of thumb I know of:

1. Measure twice, cut once.
2. You can't cut it longer.

It might be a good idea to go at least a few inches longer so you've got the extra to trim off if necessary. Besides, they'll charge you for 4 feet even if you only want 44". May as well get the 4" of extra copper.

See, now that is a tip. I forgot they would sell me 4' even if I only wanted 3.8'

Make your own with welding cable & copper lugs from the auto parts. Crimp the lugs & solder them to ensure good current carrying capacity.
As mentioned ---get a little extra.

I make all of mine from welding cable, just go to the local welding store and they will cut to length(not cheap but you only buy them once)

I was in there Saturday at 11:59 and they didn't have all the stuff they needed to make them. So I got together revised measurements and was going to have him make them last night. I got there and he was all excited because he made them before I got there. They are a hair shorter than I would like, but they will work. Oh well.

Welding cable is great for a 6v system but is not necessary for a 12v system. It's an amperage thing. If you make up cables soldering is a must do.
