the starter on my 706 quit working today when i got on, it first sounded like it was engaging then disengaging really fast with some grinding once in a while now it dose nothing. when i took it out and bench tested it, it worked fine. the Bendix went in and out great. but when it is in the tractor it still dose nothing. i have cleaned all connections and checked the safety switch and starter button. is it the solenoid or the starter? thanks

Could be a weak Bendix spring too. just went through that problem here. thought it was the ring gear but the Bendix was bad.

At the solenoid try jumping the battery stud to the small S terminal. That eliminates all the wiring except the battery cables. If it still does not work, jump between the battery stud and starter motor stud. That will eliminate the solenoid. If it still doesn't work, turn the lights on and try again. If the lights go out when you jump the connection you have a battery, cable, or connection problem. If the lights continue to work while jumping the studs the problem is in the starter.

Did you bench test it with the same batteries? It sounds like the battery is too low to keep it kicked in. If the connections are all good, put a voltmeter on the battery & hit the starter. What is the voltage then?
