6 volt to 12 volt on model 140

I have done this conversion on a couple other tractors but not an International. I will put a condenser before the coil to drop the current from 12 to 6 volt. But what about the solenoid on the starter? Will it handle the 12 volts or do I need to add a resister there or do I replace it with a 12 volt solenoid?

Wayne - A purist would replace the old 6 volt solenoid with a 12 volt. In reality however existing 6 volt solenoid will do fine on 12 volts, so long as you don't overdo it (crank it too long) when starting the engine.

Incidentally it's a BALLAST RESISTOR - not a condenser - you will wire in series with the existing coil to reduce 12 volts to 6 volts.

Yes Bob you are right, it is a resister not a condenser. Wasn't thinking. I will suggest a change to a 12 volt solenoid but i'm doing this for my brother so it's up to him. Thanks for the info, Wayne
