MW Govenors

(quoted from post at 14:30:02 03/01/11) How do I know if the govenor that I have and the govenors that I take off off parts tractors are M&W?

Usually the tube that fits between the givernor and the carburetor will be marked "M&W"

Otherwise, remove the cover from the governor and have a look. The standard IH governor will have just 2 flyweights, while the M&W will have 4. Some of the other aftermarket governor kits also had 4 weights, so you just need to look for an identifying logo.

They will have "M&W" stamped on the governor tube to the carb. The tube will also be flat on the frontside whereas IH was round.

I have been told that M&W sold both 3 weight & 4 weight governors. I don't know that for a fact but was told that by an old IH partsman.

M&W early ones were 2 weight, late ones were 4 weight. You could also have the the Thopmson Rocket Gov. also a 4 weight gov. They dont have any markings on them

The tubes will have an oval tag cast right in or they will have a plate riveted to them. If they have either, even if you can't read them then it's a buy.

Picture of a 2 weight M&W. Tompson made one also the weight pins were retained by cotter pin, unlike the IH ones. Think at one time the M&W and Tompson weights may have come from the same place. Think some of the weights had the same # in both. M&W throttle tube had a flat on the side with name, also used was a round throttle tube with tag, mounted with rivets. Think at one time period a plain tube.

Thanks for the info.I don't have a M&W yet but I still have 4 different govenors to take off of parts tractors. One of them is a Super M. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Both my H and SMTA that I got from my FIL had M&W govs on them. I didn't know it until years after I bought either one. I asked him about it and he had no idea what I was talking about.
