A neighbor has a Old M that has a broken rear end casting. Under the Bull gears? What sould he do to fix it? My toughts are to replace the rear end. What will interchange for years??

You could try to weld it up, but to do it right you would need to take it all apart. If you go though the work you might as well just put a new casting on. They are rather plentiful so they should be on the cheaper side.

Sir, When you say broken what do you have? A 1" hole or 1" crack, how big is the problem? If it were small I would repair, If large than mabe replace. Oldiron29

i have seen where the axle brg. goes to hel- and the bullgear wears a hole in the housing. is that what happened here?

That is what happens when the bearing fails. A ball falls out and then gets trapped between the bull gear and the housing, and since there isn't any room to spare, the housing cracks. My 1940 M has a patch consisting of a length of sheet metal and some heavy gasket material. The patch is held in place with about a dozen or so small machine screws and lock washers. The screws thread into holes that were drilled and tapped. The patch is kind of ugly, but it works, and it is definitely a part of the tractors history, so it will just stay that way.

I hope he woud know what to do when they start to become too large

I have drained & cleaned the oil out, then ground a v along the crack & brazed them shut. It is a challange doing overhead brazing, but it worked ok when I was done. Open all the plugs you can find to let the smoke out.

I cracked the housing on my H after some ice formed in the transmission and broke loose. I had a certified welder weld it up. Looks great. Needs to be welder that is good with cast iron.
