F30 OIL SEAL

I need to pull the flywheel on my F30 and replace the oil seal behind the flywheel. How hard is this to do? Thanks for any help

Splitting a F-30 to get at the rear seal is not necessary. It may be easiest to pull the engine.

Very hard. The flywheel is pressed on and you better have the mother of all pullers or you won't get it off. You don't have to pull the engine but if you do you would have more room to work. How bad is it? I'd let it leak.

I'm with cowman.......it takes a serious puller on steroids to get it off. Unless you are setup to work on heavy equipment, normal shop tool just ain't gonna do it.

What Cowman said! Even if you do get it off the seal is only a felt washer. It doesn"t really prevent leaks, just slows them down on a good day. Unless it is pouring out, I would let it leak. Those flywheels rarely come off without a LOT of pulling force. You might be lucky, but so far I have never been.

I have the puller, and have done this in the tractor. Lasted about a month and then started leaking exactly as before. These old girls just like to mark their territory.

hello,

It leaks where the clutch housing is bolted to the block.Right now I just keep some silicone caulking on it and it slows it down alot.Maybe better leave good enough alone I guess.I also need to fix the clutch.I think the pressure plate is gone, I can't push in clutch and change gears, but I can pull it off with other tractor and the clutch isn't slipping just can't push in clutch and change gears .Maybe the release bearing is bad you think?I have sprayed PB Blaster for a few months now with no luck.Tell me what you think please. Thanks for the advice.

Well, it isn't a huge job to open up the clutch housing. First, disassemble the coupler to the transmission. Then you can take the clutch housing face plate off and truly see what is going on. I simplified the explanation here, but in general, getting to that point is not all that bad. If you have to replace the clutch plate, you'll have to go that far anyway................we can guess here all day, but until you open it up, that is all that we can do...............guess.

Ok thanks I will go ahead and tear it down. Can you tell me where I can find clutch parts? Thanks for the advice.

I get clutch parts at Napa from Hy-Capacity.
Your description of leaking between the block and bellhousing is interesting.
Here's a pick of what's back there. There is a gasket between the block and bell housing. The center red ring is the main seal retainer. The rear cam bearing also penetrates the block and is sealed by the gasket between the block/bell. All splash lubed, so its usually the felt main.

I get very little oil dripping out of bell housing at bottom ,it is just on the top right side between block and housing.I hope it isn't cracked.
Tnx for the picture maybe I will attempt to pull flywheel.

Harvey, before you get too far down the road, read carefully what a couple of people posted. These use a felt seal. They will weep, and they will leak a little at some point. Not sure you are taking into consideration what is required to get that fly-wheel off. And if you do get it off, and replace the felt, then 8-10 months later it is weeping again, you will have spent alot of effort, and end up at the same place (BTW, getting them back on isn't alot of fun either).

Take a look inside, evaluate the clutch while you are in there, but unless there is an obvious issue, you may want to consider just leave it as is.

I think it was 36F30 who said it best, "these old girls like to mark their territory". I have yet to meet an F series tractor that didn't have oil coming out somewhere.................

PS my whole post is meant in the most positive and constructive way. Please take it as such.

I agree with the others unless it is gushing just leave it alone. Unless you have lots of time and really enjoy getting dirty and frustrated. It will start leaking again sooner or later.
