H 12 volt conversion ?

Adam -

Most ANY alternator can work. However for the H the compact Hitachi alternator (used in many Japanese cars/PU's) is preferred since it easily fits in the confined space under an H hood.

(quoted from post at 17:38:54 02/28/11) If Im buying new would I be better to go with a 1 wire or stick with the 3 wire?

Go to Napa and tell them you want a 3 wire Delco 10si alternator. It will probably cost you 40 or 50 bucks. I have a Delco 10si 3 wire on my H, and a 1 wire on my Super C, and the 1 wire wont ever charge without the tractor being 3/4-Full throttle, and for whatever reason always draws on the battery so I have to disconnect it when not in use. That could be due to the wiring from the previous owner though..not sure. But most diagrams I see are for 3 wires so that's what I prefer.

While you're there tell them you want a Napa part number IC14 12v ignition coil too (11 bucks) so you don't have to wire in a resistor.

Definitely go with a 3-wire!

One wire alternators have several drawbacks including higher cost and higher "turn on" RPM requirements. Also many have a standby current drain sufficient flatten a battery if the engine is left unstarted more than a few weeks.

Been there done that and don't even try to use the Delco 10SI on a Farmall H. Not enough room under the hood without a lot of "jerry rigging" and special adjustment features or cutting the hood while the Hitachi works and fits fine as noted by Bob M with room left for belt adjustment. The Hitachi is an inch less in diameter and you need all the extra space you can easily get. A Delco works fine on a Farmall M as it fits fine under the hood as there is more space to play with. They also work fine on a Farmall C and SC as they don't mount under the hood on those tractors. Hope this helps, Hal.

My 10si has plenty of room under the hood of my H. :?

Why would you need room for adjustment? Wouldn't you just mount it solid and use the original fan pulley system?

The original, adjustable pitch generator pulley is difficult to adapt to an alternator. Nor does it have a cooling fan.

I bought an H with the 10si already on it, and the hood would not latch or even come close. Did a little investigating and found the alternator was already up against the valve cover, so making any adjustments and using a shorter belt was not an option. In short, the Delco 10si will NOT fit under the hood of an H. There just isn't any way to make it fit. I converted mine back to an original 6 volt generator.

Anyone got a wiring diagram to cnovert a M to the Delco Alt? Pictures of the mounts would be good too. It's been converted to a dizzy by a PO. This is a working tractor but I don't wnat to have to cut up the hood.

You don't need to cut the hood on an M, there is already enough room.

I have an H that I built the bracket myself & the delco alt is in there with no modifacation to the hood. It is tight but it works.

So the gen pulley changes size as well as the fan pulley? My alt on the MD sort of fits under the hood. If the belt was shorter and the mount a hair shorter it would fit well. No idea what the alt is or how many wires. I think it is three because there is a plug on the back that is bigger than one wire.

Rustyfarmall, I respect you and look foward to your advice always, but I have to disagree with the above comment. I made my 10si fit under the stock hood of my H with enough room for enough adjustment to tighten the belt. It has about 1/2-3/4" between the alt body and the side of the hood, and about 3/4" clearance between the alt body and valve cover.

Actually yours is a 10DN series alternator but it really doesn't make any difference, they are the same size. I have mounted some like that on H's too. It is a tight fit but it will work.
