actual bore diameter of a 560- 282 diesel without sleeves?

I'm trying to find out what the bore diameter is of a 282. The IT book says 3 and 11/16ths but that is with the sleeve in. I'm looking for the bore size without a sleeve in the block. and or what is the O.D. size of a standard sleeve is? With the answer to those questions does anyone know what the allowable size difference between the actual bore and the O.D. of the sleeve should be?? I know they are a dry press fit but what does that translate into for measurements?

I measured each bore (without sleeves) and I'm seeing if I need to order oversized sleeves but cant do that without knowing what the original size is?
 
just tryng to get a handle on what your attempting to do. are the sleeves loose in block now? your saying you measured the bare block bore but want to know what the diameter is? as far as i know the block has a standard bore and just buy the sleeves . they go in with a slight press fit. i have heard of a few thou. over size sleeve but not experienced using them. you may be making something more complicated than it is?
 
My engine book does not give a block bore size for the light press fit block, serial number 71777 and below. For the heavy press fit sleeves, block serial number 71778 and above, the bore size for standard sleeves is 3.8123 - 3.8137. For .002 sleeves the bore size is 3.8143 - 3.8157. For .010 oversize sleeves the bore size is 3.8223 - 3.8237.

Light press fit sleeves need 25 to 75 lbs pressure to install, closer to the 75 is better. Pressures above 75 lbs is allowable for the last inch. Sleeve height above block is obtained by using shims. Height should be .001 - .004 with sleeve clamped down. Try to get no more than .002 between two adjacent sleeves.

Proper fit for heavy press fit sleeves is obtained by requiring no less than 750 lbs for at least five inches of travel. Pressures in excess of 2500 will require honing of the block to get proper fit. Sleeve height above block is .035 - .045. The sleeve installation tool will install the sleeve to the proper height.
 
Once on a 656 282 diesel I pulled the sleeves and put 301 pistons in.The piston dia. on the 301 is 3 13/16 or 3.8125.
 
Problem is I had one sleeve get pulled down into the crank and its in a million pieces. Second problem I can see is after I took the head off 4 out of 6 sleeves have hairline cracks around the tops and two of them are craking down the sides. I strated removing pistons and on one I pushed it up to remove it and the whole sleeve came up with the piston. Obviously not a good fit! the others were better but were not very tight. After I measured all cylinders without sleeves I have two which are about .0019 and .0016 bigger than the other bores. four of them all measure bout the same. Ideas?
 
Great info- thanks I just dont have the abilty or equipment to measure poundage on the pressure while I installing sleeves. My biggest question is if I can determine what would give me that type of pressure when I install sleeves via measurements of the block bore size in relation to the O.D. of the sleeve size. What is acceptable. From the info I have gathered the sleeve needs to be aleast somewhat bigger than the bore to get a press fit. How much bigger is too big or too small. is .002-.003 too big or should it be more like .001-.002
 
Too bad some people ticked off TV he could have answered this question. I do know there was different classes of fit on 282 blocks, seems like the block deck had letters stamped on them. The counterbores can have a wide variation in depth as well. That may have been the source of your problem. Sorry I can't be of much help, haven't rebuilt one in over 30 years.
 
Unless the engine has been replaced with a newer block the one in your 560 uses the light press fit sleeves. They 25 to 75 pounds of pressure to install so you should be able to install them by hand. Anything more that about .0005" interference fit will get tighter than that to install. The IH manual says that there were two different size sleeves originally for standard sleeves. They were marked on the sleeve with either L or H. L was on the low side on the specs, H was for the high side of the specs. All replacement sleeves are to the high side of specs.

If your measurements are accurate you will need at least two .002 oversize sleeves. I would start with one .002 oversize sleeve and try it in all the bores to see how it fits.
