Here are a couple shots of my setup on the MD. From what I have heard it is a Char-Lynn setup. I would like to take it back to the generator someday and not sure how I will do that with the power steering setup. 1 - I don't like the alternator 2 - The hood had to be cutout for the PS pump.
What was "the standard" way of doing it back then? What would/should/could I do to take it closer to stock, but retain power steering?

That pump in the pictures looks almost identical to the pump on my tractor. I see there is a filter in the PS setup. I should probably service that! My pump is pretty low on fluid. I may try to flush the system or I may just suck the old oil from the res and fill it up with clean oil.
By the way, I see we are kind of close to each other. We may have even crossed paths at Sycamore or Rock River Thresheree.
 
i see you are in se wisconsin. just up the road a piece. sycamore isnt too far north of me. havent been to rock river yet. look forward to crossing paths sometime!!
 
Rock River is always worth the trip. It is usually hotter than blazes, but other than that a nice show. Not as much shade as Sycamore.

Just went thru this myself, but did it with new parts. Mounted a pump on the outside left though, so no cutting was done. It is a working tractor with loader and power steering was just too necessary. Alternator is in the usual place on the right side in the gen spot. Used a Saginaw from a Chevy S-10. It hangs out too much but works great. Drove it with a B belt off the crank like the alt picture. Have seen that style pump shown mounted up under the hood above the injection pump but that may have been a 450? Can't find the pics.

So back to the question, where did they put it originally? And what pump is that?
 
I guess I would have to call my tractor a working tractor since it isn't a show tractor. :wink: I still want it fairly "correct" wherever correct is.
Does your pump adjustment have a screw that can be tightend to tighten the belt? Mine has a pretty fancy setup for tension making me think it might not be home made.
Do you end up having to make sure the gen and ps pump turn the proper way? Does the whole motor turn backwards or just the hour meter and distributer area go backwards?
 
Made brackets to mount pump to injection pump timing cover, complete with a tensioner screw. I used a 3.5" pulley and it works great. Also the B belt runs lower in the fan pulley groove where it isn't all worn out.

Diesel engine turns normal, only the distributor has a problem because of extra gear in the chain.

So far the only MD setup I have seen completely under the hood is one similar to yours, but with a separate tank. The guy drove it off the crank with another belt and had to move the fan forward to clear the belt, also trimming the shroud a bit to let the belt pass. He mounted the steering pump directly above the injection pump gear. That had to have been kinda ugly to do as I just examined that tradeoff and it isn't easy because of the way IH water pump is built. I have a picture of it but posting here is so annoying I don't use it.

PS: If you ever have cold starting problems, like when it chuffs and won't catch, drop the air filter cup.
 
I went to the shop last night to get my lights working and hook up the battery cables and that just made me mad. The water trap had bled down about an inch. I'm not real sure where it is leaking. I cleaned the fuel up a little from when we did the non-running bleeding, but not great. I think it might be the line from the tank, but not positive. There was fuel everywhere just from bleeding the filters. I cringe to think about bleeding the air on a restored tractor. It is bad enough when it runs down the filters, but when it comes out of the injectors and gets blown around by the fan :shock:
 
That is kinda odd. Mine never do that, although sometimes the MD has an air trapped in the glass after working on it. It goes away after a while. I think the air slowly seeps back up to the tank when it is running and the valve is open. I'm not sure how you get an inch down without something like built up air pressure or such?

They can be a mess at times. My grandpa used to rinse his M with diesel.

I just had a dead battery the other night. It has a 3 wire alternator and it works fine, but not having to shut it off with a key gets me sometimes. I wired it into the light switch and the memory is set in its ways lol
 
I did give it a little help with some air in the tank when I bled it. I starred at it for about 10 min with no action so I shot a little air in the tank. Maybe I didn't leave them open long enough? Is that a bad thing to do? (Can I wreck stuff???)
 
You can't put enough air into the tank to hurt anything. It will run fine as is so don't worry about it. One day you look down and realize the air is magically gone.

That happened when we ran it. I opened the bolt to let the air out of the water trap and only fuel... Last time it happened I just ignored it and then bled it again after a couple weeks and got it all out. This time we ran it around the block and it was all gone by the time we were done.
