I have late 70's IH784 four cylinder diesel that I am working on. while I have the hood off etc., thought it would be a good time to install some type of block heater or water heater for starting aid in cold weather. Recommendations? Last fall I installed one of those lower radiator hose heaters on another tractor and had good luck with that this past winter.

i have the style that you mentioned on the lower radiator hose on my 1980 784 and it works great. it went bad a few years ago and found a replacement easily at the napa in town for thirty bucks i think.

I have one of the radiator hose heaters on my 504. If it has been plugged it overnight, you don't even need glow plugs!

The best type heater is one that installs in the block. Most often called a freeze plug heater. I have a recirculating heater on my 1206 that works. I'd still rather have a freeze plug heater in it. When it's -30F it still is a bear to start even when plugged in round the clock. Some engins don't have the room in the block for those so other types of heaters have to do. Thats why I own a 125,000 BTU torpedo heater too.
