Tractor data must be wrong. How much oil for a d414 w/turbo

Either tractordata is wrong or a m&w turbo with it's lines and filter holds a lot more oil than I would think. Tractordata calls for 12 qts of oil for a 966. I bought 4 gallons(16 quarts) and it's still below the add mark. How much do they normally hold?

It is quite possible that when the turbo was added the dip stick was replaced with one for a 1066. The oil pans are the same. The dip sticks are different so that the non-turboed engines are full at 12 quarts while the turbo charged engines are full at about 20 quarts.

Oh, ok. So should I fill it up with about 20 quarts or should I get the 966 dipstick for it? I know on car engines it always says do not overfill. Would there be any consequences? I know the dt414's had oil jets and things that the d414's didn't. Thanks.

There is no problem with running it with 5 gallons of oil. That will only bring it to the level that the other turbo charged engines use. That added oil will help the engine run cooler. The oil in an engine is used for both lubrication and cooling.

All 400 series engines have piston cooling jets. The difference is that the turbo charged engines use 12 jets while the NA engines used only 6. The turbo charged engines also used a larger oil pump to compensate for the extra oil for the added jets and the turbo charger.
