OT: Extreme 4x4

Anyone watch todays episode? They compared a Hemi converted Wrangler X to a supercharged V-6 in a JK. The 6 was stock in all other regards. The dyno numbers shocked me. Not because the supercharged 6 was higher in hp and close in torque to the V8, but rather the loss of HP through the drivetrain. The hemi checked in at 360hp, but on the rear wheels only hit approx 214hp, with 250ish ft/lbs torque. That's a 41% loss in hp. The guy dumped 21000 grand in it to complete the swap! That is insane to me....I know there's a loss in hp, just didn't think it'd be that much. Anyway, I just thought it was interesting. Take Care....Shawn

it is pretty interesting to see the HP difference lost in the transmission. Just look at the old tractor test results. Belt vs. drawbar, plus the naming convention Mccormick 10-20. that is a 50% loss in the tranny.

Hey Tom,
Yea in my mind I was attempting to manipulate these figures to drawbar hp vs belt hp. According to Tractor Data, the 450 has a drawbar rating of 51.3 hp and PTO at 55.3 hp. That's pretty close. Yet the 560 drawbar rating is only 44.83 hp and the PTO checks out at 61.04 hp. Both were for gas engine results. Is this a result of the 6 cylinder engine of the 560? I know the newer/bigger tractors have alot more going on in the tranny end of things, especially the hydros, which explains more significant drops in drawbar vs pto figures. For the most part the letter and early number series were pretty close, within a few ponies. I'm by no means starting a war....Never had a 560. Would love one. That just happened to be my reference. And I also realize equations and paper calculations don't represent field conditions. Just curious I guess...Shawn

300HP Cummings in a Freightliner pulled 240HP on a chassis dyno, and I was told that was just right by the Cummings shop in Indy IN.

Cummins engines have a lot of power in em for usually bein a smaller displacement than the competitors engines. Guess that's what you get for havin a company that focuses purely on the engines performance. I know I wouldn't have anything but a Cummins

My 240U has 40HP at the engine, approx. 28.5 at the PTO and 22 at the drawbar.... makes for a 45% loss of HP.... probably pretty typical of that time.
