Please tell me if I"m doing this right. (gas
engine)I checked the compression and all cylinders
read the same 130psi. I set the points to (.020).
Spark plugs are at(.023). Carb is generally 1 1/4
turn at top and 3 turns at bottom. Oh yeh, and I
adjusted all the valves at (0.017). I"m trying to
set the timing at a low idle and the timing marks
are jumping around and not steady enough to make
it easy for me to visually pin point where the
mark should set. I"m thinking I hear a slight
steady puff at every firing revolution. Now could
I have a bad valve or are my settings off? My
vacume guage is not perfectly steady but not all
over the place. Please help! ....Thanks Tim

Engine has to idle down real slow to set the time at TDC with the engine running. If the engine is running at a steady speed when the timing is jumping around, I would go through the distributor and check all the advance mechanism parts for defects. Set the time at high idle on the 25 degree mark then if the engine will idle down slow and the advance parts work it should come back to near TDC.

Ok. I'm a knuckle head, I was goin for 25 at low idle. Who knows? So, I will let you know how it went. Thanks Tim

I had a heck of a time keeping my 400 timed where I'd set it.I finally broke my cam gear plowing,so I ordered a brand new cam gear.($150).It sure stays timed better, and I swear I can tell a real difference in how well it pulls and lugs, and idles a lot smoother

For a working tractor the timing should always be set at high idle or at least fast enough that the distributor is fully advanced. That way any error in timing will occur when the engine is not normally under load.

Loose clearance on the distributor bushing can and will cause erratic timing as well. Setting it to TDC with engine off and marks lined up should get you to the correct advance when at high idle (wide open). Jim
