1945 FARMALL H TRANNY COVER-OFF AND BROKEN TEETH

Pulled my tranny cover off. Saw a couple teeth missing from speed gears toward the front. Will research damage and continue. From a visual, the rear end appeared ok.Didn't move anything yet.

That would lock up a bull gear for sure. Broken teeth would lock it up as well, but both tires.
Don't forget to check your axle bearings while you are in there.

I'm working on getting photos- got more questions for you guys. Thank you very much for hanging on with my "H".

Bring them on. I had my H apart in the summer of 09 so I know my way around the inside a little bit.
I tore it apart down to this. I didn't take the bottom trans shaft out because I couldn't see anything wrong with it.

Here are the speed gears you are referring to.

sflem849- Speed gear pic- First: on the left side of your picture were the corner oil splash webs are by hammer, mine looks "ground"(both sides) as if done in factory? The lip is almost gone. Don't see cause- just unusual. Second: My mid gear( for belt pulley?)has beveled teeth like yours. Is that normal, or wear? The double gear facing mid gear is slightly beveled also( I think this is from belt pulley gear engagement). Third: The second gear in from the left has a shoulder in teeth like yours and the largest diameter looks "sharpened" like yours. Is that normal? Fourth: The bottom first gear on left is the one missing at least two consecutive teeth. Looks like a split job to me. Any idea on cost of bottom gear? I have not identified it yet for parts search....

By bottom gear, I'm guessing you're refering to the Constant Mesh Gear. I drew an arrow to it in the picture at the bottom. I broke this gear on my H two years ago. It is a discontinued part, and somewhat hard to find, at least it was for me. I looked online for about a month, and one happened to pop up on Ebay new and in packaging. I believe it was 175.00 or so. Mine was due to the mainshaft pilot bearing going bad, allowing play in the shaft which caused the gear to break off a few teeth while under a load. You do not have to split the tractor to replace it. You will have to remove your hydraulic belly pump, and work from underneath. It's not a fun job.

And this is where mine broke.

Faster, I think your oil looks even worse than mine did!?! Talk about emulsified water!!!

IIRC the farthest gear to the left is the belt pulley gear. The one in the middle is the 2nd/3rd slider gear. The little one is supposed to be funny beveled a little bit. IIRC it slips inside another gear or something for direct drive/5th gear. If you can't find one just let me know. I have heard other people say they are tough to find, but the salvage yard near me had a couple H/300/350/460 trans for parts sitting on the shelf. I bought my 4/5 gear for $30ish.

Faster346: Yes. The red arrow points to my broken gear. My book calls out:Constant Mesh Gear, 55 teeth pn 48418 D on countershaft. Glad to hear I don't have to split- she's jammed in polebarn- not much room, dirt floor.Do you remove nut and pull shaft out? I don't have hyd. pump out yet.
sflem849: The previous owner did weld up 2nd gear. My first thoughts were this may be the culprit. Didn't dig in yet, but like Faster indicates by arrow, Constant Mesh gear shows teeth missing. That's all I have for now.....
THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR ATTENTION!

Once you remove the rear bearing from the shaft and housing you will be able to remove the shaft and gears as an assembly. The gears are a press fit on the shaft.

sflem849: Thank you for locating this site. According to my book, the constant mesh gear is not splinned (and is a press fit?) and goes on the opposite side of the shaft spline. I'm just going by drawing at this point. Thank you again. Jim Z.

The guy looked to be parting out an H on eBay (I hate that) bc he had about every trans gear listed. The auction probably ended by now and I didn't see any bids with 30 min to go. You could probably contact him and get the constant mesh and 2/3 gear for a reasonable offer.
Here is Jackel Bros number (920) 563-3447 That is a junk yard by me in Jefferson, WI. They had the parts for mine for pretty reasonable. I know he ships stuff sometimes or I could pick it up and ship it to you.

Hi, Would you send me an email as I have some issues with a Farmall H I would like to discuss with you as it appears you have a very good knowledge of this tractor. I am also going to be restoring a Farmall 240 later this year and have a couple of things to discuss on that one as well. My email is open and I would appreciate an off-forum chat with you, thanks, Hal.

sflem849: Thank you for another lead. I contacted them. I will need to confirm numbers and pricing. It is spelled Jaeckel Bros. I will let you know if I would need you to get involved. Thank you for the offer! Do you live close enough to them for your sake?

30 min, but I don't mind wandering around there just for fun. Yeah, I forgot the e. I should have known better!
The guy sure is a treat to talk to on the phone. He's nice enough, just a hair different.

sflem849: One aspect I left out. I need to confirm if the constant mesh gear in my tractor is a splined bore or not. The pic showed a spline, my book shows not. And someone mentioned it is a press fit......... Thanks again for the help!
