carb rebuild service

I posted on this a while back but did not get much response and I could really use some help. I have a 1949 C, once my grandfather's, that I'm trying to get back into shape. I want to send the carb to a reputible rebuild shop, but have no references and no idea where to start other than just picking somebody off the web. Can anybody reccomend one? Does anybody have any experience with YT's service? I know it's a simple carb but I'm not about to learn on it. This is important to me and I want to entrust it to capable hands. Would appreciate any input you guys might be able to offer. Thanks.

Just Google farm tractor carburetor rebuilders.
Most charge $150.00 and up.

Denny's will do a really good job.

Don't send it to Denny's before you do a websearch for some feedback. You won't send it to them if you read the posts
Send it to Matt Gall at Motec Engineering Tipton, IN. I have sent 3 there so far and they come back perfect. The cost is $75 shipped back to you. Try and beat that. He even opened up the venturi on my SMTA carb for pulling. It is really a heck of a tractor now.

Dave, those carbs are so simple you can do it with little or no help. Get a carb kit from Rustyfarmall who posts on this forum and he provides all the instructions you need to get it right. You might have someone like a good auto mechanic fine tune it once you get it going but that is a simple task. This isn't a carb used on high performance race cars and contains very few parts. A good cleaner along with compressed air to clean everything out is a must. There is probably a very good carb person right near where you live if you ask around. Take a chance and give it a try and you'll be surprised what you can learn. If you want a blow-up or diagram of your carb send me an email and I'll run you a copy from my parts catalog and mail it to you if that would help. Rusty's parts kit will probably have everything you need for getting it done, Hal.

As Hal says those carb are so simple with a good kit and a can of stuff to soak the carb in most any body can rebuild one. Me I use the Walker brand kits I get at O'Reilly's cost around $20 and a can of Berrymans Chem dip. I have rebuilt a good many carbs over the years an few have ever cause me much if any problems

We have our own resident carb rebuilder on this forum....rusty farmall....have never used him but have heard only good comments on his work. Think he has web site should be able tp find him on Google.

Guys, thanks for all the posts but I have to reiterate that I will not consider doing this myself. I consider this tractor a family heirloom and I've never done a carb so I don't want to mess it up. I appreciate the references and have already e-mailed rustyfarmall and Motec. Any others would still be appreciated. Thanks again to everybody. I appreciate all the input--even if you have more faith in me that I do!

I have never figured it is worth it. The can of dip is a solid $25 and the kit is another $20. That still doesn't get you to $75, but at least I shouldn't have to take it apart again. You can reuse the dip, but the job these guys do is more thorough because they actually boil it from what I hear. Not to mention Matt dynos it and adjusts it at his house.

Dave where you at that can be a big thing when it comes to rebuilding a carb. Shoot I could do one for you if your close enough, don't do many for other people but have done a few. As I said they are very simple and almost bullet proof unless you take a big hammer to them

Ask anywhere you might take it what its going to cost first. My aunt just dropped $600 to have her M carb rebuilt...she thought she got a good deal until I told her a rebuild kit cost less than $30 and it takes less than 30 minutes to do!

Dave, where are you located. A number of guys on this board would be willing to do this for you and you can watch. I am happy to help if you are close enough.........

Tom, I live in southwest Michigan in Allegan County. The town is Otsego and we are right along US-131. Thanks--Dave

I'll agree that $600 is way too high, but I can also guarantee that anyone who thinks it can be done in 30 minutes has NEVER done a total rebuild/restoration on any tractor carburetor. I've spent well over 30 minutes just trying to disassemble some of them WITHOUT breaking anything or twisting off bolts and screws, which only leads to even MORE time required.

Putting a kit in a carb is simple stuff. Hardest part is making sure everything is clean, clean, clean! Doing a true rebuild isn't. A true rebuild includes making sure the throttle and choke shaft bushings are within specs and replacing and reaming to fit as needed. The tools and ability to do that is what most home mechanics lack.

So if you check the throttle and choke shafts for excessive play and find little if any you can do the rebuild yourself. If not send it to someone who has the tools and know how.

On a project like your with litle or no knowledge of carbs I'll tell you to send it to someone. Your tractor is very special to you so it would be worth it. If you knew about carbs I'd tell you to take a close look at it for overall condition and maybe do it yourself.

David, Wherever you live is a tractor club. Ask a member who is a good carb. man they will know who to repair it for you. I have done them for years & believe me it takes more than 15 min to do it right. testing float, cleaning, correct wear in throttle shaft area.. When done right it will be worth it if you promise to run clean fuel. LOL

Contact Rustyfarmall for your rebuild he has done a few for me and I was more than pleased with the results.
