What is it about the 400

Why is it when I look on the photo ads for Farmall 400,I don"t see many. If you were looking for M"s, H"s, cubs, ect. you find plenty. So many tractors for sale, very few 400"s. Tell me why this is. Are they not desirable, or do guys just want to keep them. I have an early 1954 ser. 627, and just got 1955. These are my first two tractors so expect alot of questions from Bugspot. Thanks

I think that they are such a great tractor that nobody wants to get rid of them. At least that is what I am telling myself!

40,000 something for the 400 compared to over 500,000 for the H"s and M"s. I have two (1) is diesel and the other is gas. Both are nice tractors.

Around 40,000 400 built compared to up towards 300,000 M tractors. Lots of 400 were used hard when bigger implements started being common. Less tractors more failure of parts. Some M tractors were also, but lots of 400 were souped with more power than a lot of M tractors used in the field. Not all M were built up with less power though. 400 were never a popular tractor in a lot of places though. Used to buy good 400 runners for less than a regular M brings now.
Some of thats just my opinion so take it for what its worth.

Tractorman, sorry about posting about the same as you. I started the post when phone rang. Didn't know you posted until I finished afterwards.

They make for one hell of a antique puller for the 6000-9000lb classes if done right.

While their price does not reflect it, I would take the average 400/450 over the average M any day. More power, usually a TA, live PTO, live hydraulics and most have a 2 point. The only down side, their reputation is they burn a little more fuel.

I heard they were a fill them up twice a day tractor. Once at lunch and once at supper where the M only needed fuel at supper. With power comes thirst!
I would take one over an M for all of the extras. Live power and hyd is invaluable on a working tractor. You sure can get by without it, but once you have it why go back!?!
Yes, they tractor pull well. Especially when they let you use the TA.

Around here the 400 and 450 did not have as good a reputation as the super or smta. Like said, gasoline consumption on gas models and all the leaks and hydraulic vibrations causing hydraulic line failure. Should be noted that most 400's had the small fuel tank which gave some what of a false impression on fuel consumption. It was not unusual to have a 400 used tractor standing on the lot that could not be moved where the super's went right away. I personally didn't think this made a lot of sense as 80 percent of the parts were interchangeable from SMTA to a 400. Hoods, hydraulics and hitch, slightly higher comp head on gas that is about it for diff.

You can ask the same question about pretty much any tractor IH built after 1954, and the answer boils down simply to the production numbers.

Part of that was due to the fact that IH made so many rugged, reliable letter series tractors. Most of them were still running strong, and could handle the available implements. 400's and 450's were more of a status symbol than a necessity.

I dont get it either! I"m not much of a red guy, but I bought a 400 gas and turns out to be one of my favorite of the IH brand. I had 6 of them and now I have five! 2 gas, 1 diesel-which is a really cool tractor, and 2 LP"s! I have one each year they where built. They must have been a really nice tractor to farm with when they came out! I really dont see too many at shows or anything and dont know why they are not more popular.
