SMTAD Repower options?

I am looking for a somewhat easy repower for a SMTAD with a bad engine. This one is too costly to fix. Prefer a diesel of some kind that would not take much fabrication. Is anyone familiar with doing this or have any ideas? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I would consider a gas engine if I could find a Z casting block. Thanks

Dear Andy have you looked at the prices of SMTAD tractors?

They are very dear. You could probably trade that tractor as is for a good running SMTA that was not wounded. Best of luck! Jim

Andy - I agree with JimN! If you can't afford to fix the original engine, try to locate a suitable donor engine from an SMD, Super WD6, 400D, 450D, W400D, W450D etc. Even a UD264 or UD281 power unit.

Would be a shame to modify (and devalue) a very low production tractor like your SMTAD by swapping in a non-stock engine - gas OR diesel.

Self expalainatory.

Find an MD or SMD motor.
Steal guts.
Insert into your proper casting coded block.
That's all there is to it...

Why are you worried about the correct casting codes only if you put a gas motor in it?

Seems ashame to modify a SMTAD. If it's to costly for you to fix, I'm with the others either sell/trade for a different tractor. There is also the other option of saving it until you can afford to fix it.

Or any old running gas motor until you can fix it. At least this way it isn't just a REALLY heavy paper weight.

Whats wrong with your engine? They can be rebuilt with good used parts for less than new. Be a sad day if you devalue a rare tractor that much just to save a couple thousand dollars. Average SMTA unrestored running $3500 more or less, Average SMTAD running unrestored $6500-7500.

If you put a gas engine in it to fake people out, you also have to fake the serial tag. If you don't want to fix your engine, sell it to someone who will. The tractor is too valuable to mess up.

hadnt thought about the power units to this point. I am in deep with this tractor already and the torque needs work also, head cracked, etc. Thanks for the replies fellers I will consider those options and wait til something shows up, parts or otherwise.

If it's any consolation, this is one of the few tractors you can spend a LOT of money fixing, and still come out ahead on the tractor's value.

How about a 282 out of a 560? Change the frame rails and it would bolt right up. You'd have to lengthen the hood. I was going to do that very thing until I found internal problems with the 560 engine and gave it up.
