I picked up a w4 not that long ago and am finally getting around to working on it. The serial tag is missing and I was wondering if there was any other way to date it. The grill has International badging on it and all the other pics of these i"ve seen have McCormick badges.

the ih badge was used on the i-4 does your tractor have a foot throttle or 20" front tires or somebody just change the badge

Unless he means the IH logo, like on later tractors.

If the badge on the front of the grill spells out INTERNATIONAL and has not been changed, you have a International I-4. If it spells out McCormick or McCormick Deering, you have a W-4 unless it happened to be a OS-4 or O-4. If it has the IH square emblem, it is a Super W-4. You can get an approximate date by looking at the date code castings on all of the major castings. There are numerous different identifing features between the different models but the emblem is a good place to start.

You can also check the serial number on the block too, should be on the right side upper front. If I remeber correctly, my I4's block is stamped that it is an "I" on the block too. If it wasn't tarped and covered with snow I would go check. The engine number may not be the same as what was on the tag, but it should be close. Good luck!

The badge does spell out INTERNATIONAL. Is there a source for casting dates for the block, frame, etc anywhere? The engine appears to have been originally painted yellow and has a distributor ignition not a magneto.

Flat spot under #1 spark plug on the block. Should have IBHM then the serial number of the engine. It should be the same as the tractor, assuming it hasnt been changed to an H engine, or another -4 series engine.

Casting codes are on every cast piece of the tractor. They will be in the format of MONTH*DAY*YEAR: Two numbers, two more numbers, and a letter.

12*25*X = December 25, 1952, for example

P = 1946
Q = 1947
R = 1948
S = 1949
T,U,V = 1950
W = 1951
X = 1952
Y = 1953
Z = 1954
A = 1955

The letters go on in both directions. I just included a sample.

Yours is a I-4. There were lots of optional front wheel size and types, including solid tires, available.
