My buddy has a 1100 IH sickle mower that he wants to sell. I dont know much about them and was wondering what i should look for before i buy it? What is it worth it is in pretty good condition with normal wear from usage. Thanks for the help

Just last summer one sold at a sale here for $2200. It had some rust, but other than that, it was in very good condition. I wanted it, but wasn't ready to pay that price!

I really cannot give you a guidline on price. $2200 is really high and unless you were going to use it to make a living I would consider the older series balanced head mowers (100, 110, 115, 120) before I would pay that kind of money. The money on this mower is in the balanced head. They are repairable but, from what I hear, not the easiest. Rebuilt are available...once again from what I hear. If this mower is mounted on a tractor have the seller run it for you. Listen to it and check linkages for play. Look for leaks. Take your chances. I have the 115 (my favorite) and the 120 (a real PITA) and both are good mowers. Get a manual and, as with all sickles, follow the lubrication chart like gospel. Don't over lube the balanced head. I may have a manual for that if you need one.

I cut a few 1000 acres with a 1100 when I was a kid. Great mowers. Keep the pin greased in the sickle head and keep an eye on the gear oil in the head. Yes, replacement heads are expensive, but good maintenance can prevent alot of trouble.

I bought an International 1000 5 years ago with a 9' bar for $300. Granted that's the cheapest I've ever seen a working unit sell for. I knew it has some wear but I didn't realize how much until I put a new guard on it - about 1" longer than the older worn guards.

Have him hook it up and run it up to PTO speed before you buy it if you can. Make sure the pulleys are lined up and the mower bar is not bent or sprung. If the pulleys don't line up you may want to pass - a lot of these have the frame sprung from abuse.

Follow the manual in terms of maintenance and store it inside if you buy it.
