I got to say I find this forum and the archives more valuble than any book- thanks for all the info

Now the big question. I dont have 2,000 plus to drop in a complete overhaul which is what I would love to do. I hate doing it this way but can I get away with one new sleeve (that fits) and a piston as long a everything else checks out or am I asking for more trouble? doing it right the first time is not in my budget at the moment.

By all means you can get away with repairing just one cyl. Trick will be to get a nice snug fitting sleeve in a well cleaned bore. I would put in a .002 oversize myself but that requires some honeing of block with a "rigid" hone, not a glaze buster type with spring loaded stones. You most likely won't find any sizing numbers on that engine block and if you could would not be able to find sleeves to correspond. Also, watch the counter bore and sleeve flange protrusion over block. Must be with in .002 of ajoining cylinders.

Yes, you can do that. You repairing the engine because of a broken sleeve, not overhauling an engine because it is shot.

Best of Luck.

It is not wrong to fix what is broken and leave what is not broken for further usefulness. I would use magna-flux (or other crack locating method) on the other cylinders just to keep peace of mind that it was not self destructing. Jim

I once replaced 2 sleeves(used ones at that)24 years and almost 4000 hours later, that tractor is still running....706 with 310german(turbo)

Locktite makes a product call sleeve retainer and if your new sleeve goes in easy pull it back out and use that on it. And yes one new sleeve and piston will be fine.

again all great info. Thank you!

going to get to it during the next couple of weeks! I'm sure I'll have more questions but I will try to keep you all informed of the progress.

The only thing to besure of. There is a letter code on each cylinder. It is stamped on the block. at least it was on the c263 in 706. If you have a A size bore get the A size sleeve.
