gas tank removal and coating help! 1949 H

cary brief

Hi all, won;t waste time with stories, I need help removing my tank on a 49 H, got the bottom bolts off, but can;t slide it out - what must come off? the steering column? any suggestions on how to get it off - the serviceman"s guide is no help. Also can anyone suggest a good tank coating? No way to really clean and coat the tank while it is on (that I know of) again thanks in advance for your time and wisdom...

All I can think of to remove a tank is the fuel line, the three nuts and springs and the hood. I thin you also need to pull the shaft out of the steering U joint, but it has been a while since i did mine and I'm not sure. If so just loosen the bolt on the u joint yoke, loosen the bolt that hold the steering column to the deck and it should pop right out, maybe with a little bit of persuasion. The tank should be loose with the nuts and springs off, and then you only have to move the steering shaft far enough to wiggle the tank out.

When I removed mine on my '45 H last fall, I just needed to remove the 3 bolts and the fuel strainer assembly and it slid right out the side. It's a tight fit, but I was able to do it without needind to loosen or remove anything else.

I never thought of that.... If I had removed the studs in the bottom of the tank I could have done it that way too. That will be a very handy idea next time I have to do it.

thanks, that is what I thought but was hoping I could get away with not doing it because the bolts dont want to move much. I will try to wiggle it out again, but it didnt seem to want to come without much more room. maybe with a few days rest it will cooperate ! thanks
