FARMALL H TRANNY COVER REMOVAL

Need to slide off or lift off transmission top plate to check for noise. After supporting steering column, bolts out of gas tank support, and removing belt wheel housing, and then taking shifter out the top, will the plate slide backward and off, or will shifter linkage and forks prevent this? Anything else to consider? THANK YOU!!
 
WILL NOT SLIDE!!!
The shift forks prevent it and you would probably wreck them if you tried. I did it with two guys, but some use an engine hoist.
 
I had to remove the cover on my son-in law's super H. I used a cherry picker an lifted straight up. Yes, the forks pretty much dictate this... good luck to ya in your project
 
There are also 2 guide pins on the cover. Best to use a cherry picker and carefully tap around the edges to get it to pop loose.

I took the cover off mine to remove a big ice lump right after I got it. I hung the tank and the steering column from nails in the ceiling joists and then walked it up one side at a time with a pry bar and small blocks till the forks cleared the gears and I could tip it up to one side and look in. It is not impossible to do alone but it takes more time for sure.

You can get good look at transmission gears by removing belt pulley assembly. This is true for M it has been many years since I worked on H but would think it would be same,

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO!!I have never been inside these tranny's, just a CUB, and that is easy- just pull the cover. I had a slight knocking a couple weeks ago. Babied it till I got a new sound(grinding/clunking)when engaging the clutch in any gear, and it would stall. Pushed in barn to work on. Took off the belt pulley housing- didn't see anything yet..... Thanks again!!

Pilot or throwout bearing. I don't remember which one. You don't have to split it for that.
 
Pilot or throw out bearing- could that , and that alone cause my noise when letting out the clutch and it stalls? It shifted into any gear fine. I don't have the cover removed yet, but it sure would be easier if it's the above. My gut tells me inside the tranny- too hard to diagnose through a keyboard.... I appreciate any comment or help. Thank you again.
 
Probably not that if it stalls. A lot of guys think that one of those bearings is a rear end problem.

Does it always stall? You did check to make sure it wasn't in two gears?

BTW, you don't need to take the shifter off to pull the lid.

It always stalled when letting out the clutch(If I let it ride that long- I was gentle- didn"t want to push the issue till I had an idea what was going on) Gear shifting and clutch action all seemed smooth. Didn"t lock up in any two gears.We were able to push 40" into barn. Thank you for your posts. Now, here"s the long story if you want to read it-2 weeks prior, a minor "bearing clunk/knock" sound.Checked gear oil at drain plug- looked good. Finished plowing. Later,tractor warming up to plow(back blade) snow again. Took a swipe & got to where the snow was piled up. Tractor spun & stopped. Figured it was combination of cold engine, too much load and not quicker on the clutch. Everything "normal" at this point. Restart,thought that lift all was maybe a little louder to raise, shift forward to pull out, and then upon releasing clutch, a new "grinding/clunk" sound and it stalled. Restart, try all gears but 5th without any shift problem, and then it would "grind" at clutch engagement & stall. Now remember my engine was cold and I"m in a small rut, but the "ol girl should have pulled out. I was very alerted by new sound, so I quit the experiments and rolled it in. I did add warm 30w non-d. oil to the lift all before the second plowing. I rechecked the lifting after pushing into barn & it seemed to actuate louder than before..... Thank you.
 
You are correct. Your problem is in the rear end, not the clutch bearings. The stalling would certainly point that way. I almost wonder if one of the bearings came apart and lodged itself between the bull gear and the bottom of the case. That is not too uncommon with these Ms and Hs. Usually they crack the case so that might not be it or your lucky.
The fact that it spun when it locked up points to this. One side must have had a major problem locking it up. The problem could also be in the bull pinion carrier area. These are also side specific.
I run hytran in my liftall, but either works. They didn't run it back then because it wasn't invented yet.

Got a chance to pry the cover lose and will pull up when help arrives. Then we'll hopefully see what's going on...... I'll re-post. THANK YOU all again!!

That's good news. I had a bolt break off at the rear of the platform. That made it a real treat to get off.
A lot of people don't use the modern version of the forum so you are better off to repost. In the classic version your post is probably on page 10 by now so it will never get seen.
