another tread asking about reg got me thinking, i ran my my w-6 thurs pm, the gauge keep showing 30 amp running above idle, starts going towards 45 faster idle, stays there, 10 minutes later still there after engine warm. is this normal or is reg needing attention. are all reg this way or should gen/reg be checked thanks bob

30 amps would be somewhat normal when you first start the engine, but then the charging rate should go DOWN. Not up. The generator is probably O.K., but I believe it is time to replace that voltage regulator.

rusty: let me restate my tread, it goes towards 45 with faster and comes back down at slower engine speed. [doesn't hit 45 and stay, just towards it]. normal or should i still replace or do you think cleaning points in reg would help? thanks

The generator WILL charge at a higher rate with increased RPMS. That is perfectly normal, but 45 amps is rather high unless the battery was nearly flat, and after 10 minutes of running and charging, the battery should not be that flat. Probably would be a good idea to get the battery checked AND the regulator checked and tested.

Don't know if the reg. is easy to access on this tractor---but if it's easy, pull the cover & see what the contacts look like. See what the voltage/ current contact/relay does to the charge rate when you "work" it by hand [open/ close].

You need to check voltage while it is charging. If 6 volt system anything above 7.5 volts would be high and on 12 volt system anything over 14.8 would be high and require regulator repair or replacement. If voltage is lower than that and still charging high rate you have defective or very dead battery. If voltage it low and battery is gassing heavily you have bad battery. Of course a good battery will gas heavily if voltage is too high.

Got to thinking---you could have a short in the field wire from gen to reg--or an internal grounded situation on the F terminal on the gen.
Pete is right--check the battery out first.

sorry forgot to mention: it is a 6v pos gnd, i put a 8v"er in it for the extra punch for starting, [had sitting around] the 6v was in good cond, gauge reads the same for the 6v/8v. i"ll put 6v in my smaller tractors. i"ll double check gauge when i run it again, and go on every ones info. let me know if you think of any thing else i should do/check. thanks bob
