Farmall Super A Finishing Mower

I am thinking about purchasing a finishing to pull behind my farmall super "A". Does anyone have recommendations on what mower to purchase and what size the super A should be able to handle. I"ve seen the woods belly mower for this tractor, but I"m thinking about converting over to 3 pt. hitch, so the finishing mower would be easier to attach I"m assuming. I"m currently cutting my grass with a 54" husqvarna lawnmower, but I would like to use my farmall more than just a few times a year in the garden. I"m planning on selling the husqvaran and purchasing a finishing mower. Does anyone know if a finishing mower will do as good of a job as a regular lawnmower. Thanks for the info.

I had a finishing mower on my 140 and it worked great, it was a bushhog 60 inch. The only problem was it was to heavy to pick up. It has 4 wheels so what i did was i made a 2 point hitch and only picked up the front of the mower that worked good also. I have a woods belly mower now and that works good except you cant use the tractor for cultivating.

I have been mowing 3 1/2 acres with a L59 Woods on my Super A since 1982. In fact I am on my second mower. I STRONGLY suggest that you stay with the Belly Mower. Mowing will take a priority over cultivation. If your grass is tall and you mow in 2nd gear, you will find out how well you "Super A" is tuned!

The belly mower will indeed give the best, most consistent, cut.

However, if your mowed area is fairly flat and even, a 3pt hitch mower will work nearly as well.

Your issue is going to be the angle of the dangle on the PTO shaft. 3pt mowers usually have the gearbox centered. The Super A's PTO is offset to the left.

Super A should be able to handle a 60" mower deck for lawn duties.

Where can I purchase the L59 belly mower that ya'll recommend. Not having any luck finding it on the internet.

Since the popularity of Zero Turn Radius Mowers, the Belly mowers have dropped a little in demand.
Keep your eye open for a used one. They do wear out!
Don't be fooled by paint. If you find one with minimal rust on deck, bearings good, working taxiwheels, and all the connections to a Farmall, it should be worth $500-800. New one from Woods will be much more.

WOODS makes the mower, and they are still available new.

How are you searching? I googled "L59 belly mower" and got TONS of hits. Google automatically added "woods" to my search term.

Be aware that there are two versions of the Woods 59" mower deck. One is the Woods 59, which discharges mowed grass on one side, and the other is the Woods L59, which discharges mowed grass on the other side.

One version fits the Farmall Cub with its "backwards" 1700RPM PTO, the other fits tractors with a conventional 540RPM PTO.

I'm not sure if you want the 59 or the L59 for your Super A. You need to talk to a Woods dealer, or someone who's an expert.

A belly mower is not something you want to be taking on and off every week to switch back and forth to cultivators.

You'll spend several hours installing the mower the first time. You'll spend about two removing it. On your second install, it'll probably take about four hours. It'll get better with subsequent installs, and you can probably get your install time down to around two hours with practice.

What'll happen is, you'll get sick of spending four hours switching between the mower and cultivators, just to run the mower for an hour in your yard, or run the cultivators for 15 minutes in your garden.

I dont know where you live I am in CT,have a woods 6 ft with brackets and all nice shape but paint is getting tierd, have a guy headed back towards mi,$750 worked great on a super A thats what it came off

You will not want to take it off to cultivate. It is a PITA to put off and on. Plus the brackets have to come off or they beat down your crop when cultivating. You might look for a fast-hitch for your tractor.r. I think woods still sells the fast hitch mount for a rear mount 59" mower. MUCH quicker than belly mount or even three-point.

Believe me you dont want to do that, its just not worth it. You would be much farther ahead to by another super A so you would have 2 of them.

Bob, seems like you are in a quarry on how to handle this short of another tractor. I have a Farmall 140 with a Woods L306 (6 foot cut) belly mower and it handles it just fine. I mow several acres with it a couple of times a month during the mowing season. I previously used dad's old Ford 8N with a new Bush Hog brand 6 foot finish mower and it did a nice job as well but nothing as simple and convenient as the belly mower so the Ford and mower have set for a few years now. It is so much nicer having the mower in front of you and not swinging around behind the tractor. It is certainly no fun task to have to continually change from one set-up on the tractor to another on a frequent basis. I use my Farmall 140 for the dedicated mowing and some other simple tasks where the mower being on the tractor doesn't bother. This is certainly no answer for you but unless you can find a way to obtain another tractor for your cultivating I wouldn't want to have to change from mowing to cultivating very often. Your Super A will handle a 6 foot either with the finish mower or belly mower unless you let it get totally out of hand between mowings. Good luck to you in whatever choice you decide to go, Hal.

I mowed with Bush Hog belly mower on A for 20 years or more and have 3 point finish mower on 25 HP MF diesel now and they both work fine in open areas. If you have a lot of trees, shrubs and such to mow around I would stick to what you have. I mow about 2 acres with finish mower but when it is time to mow around house I get out the 42 inch riding mower and a zero turn would be even better.

A lot of times our first thoughts and ideas are the best. In your case I think the idea of a pull behind (trailer) type mower would suit your need of mowing and using the tractor in the garden. If the tractor was a dedicated mower I would say the belly mower.
I like the trailer type mower because it follows around corners and obstacles better than a 3pt. And all you do is disconnect and go on your way. And you can use one as wide as you like without having to consider the weight on the 3pt.
