Need to replace the bearings on a fan pulley on the front of the engine. No snap rings can be seen. How do I carefully press the pulley off the shaft? Any suggestions as to what works best?

If it has a stamped steel pulley, good luck. Chances are pretty good it will bend before coming off. On the cast pulleys, use a bearing splitter or some method to support as much of the pulley as you can and then press the shaft out. Once the pulley is off there is snap ring that keeps the bearing located in the adjuster bracket.

Ours is the cast pulley and it did press out okay. We got it all apart. Now we need to find a replacement shaft/bearing assembly.

I don't know what engine that is , however, the 656 liked to come with the pressed steel pulley and I just pulled them off any way I could and replaced with them with the seperate hub and pulley . Hub presses on and pulley bolts to hub.
Rebuild kits were quite inexpensive with bearing, seal and impeller at that time from IH. Have not rebuilt one in many years though. I would say a rebuilt pump would be cheaper now days.

Pete, the 3800 uses the D282 I believe, possibly a D301. As I'm sure you know, the fan shaft is separate from the water pump.

On the pumps with the pressed steel pulley I would just torch them off and like you replace them with the two piece style. It seemed like no matter how careful you might be taking them off, by the time you reinstalled them they would no longer run true anyway. May as well not waste the time on them.

The shaft and bearing assembly originally was Number ST634. That was replaced with number 559205R91. Current number for the bearing assembly is 86976596. Messick's shows one on hand, $18.13.
