Farmall H help needed

I"m a pretty competent mechanic but don"t know much about tractors. I bought this H a few weeks ago. It starts up easy but doesn't rev like it should. When you move the throttle up it just keeps chugging and eventually will rev up. After the first time it then runs fine. It seems like maybe something is wrong with the governor. I've looked at it but I am not sure how it works or how it can be adjusted or what might be broken on it. Any ideas?

Richen the idle screw 1/2 turn to see if it is a bit lean. But if it runs fine when it has 10 minutes of run time, it is their nature. It is not a fuel injected esnsor controlled marvel, it is a device that your personal computer (warm grey matter) controls, from fuel mix to charge rate on the older Hs. Best of luck. Jim

I'll try that. I think the mixture has to be pretty close. There is no black smoke. I had my daughter move the throttle up and when nothing happened I gave it a little carb cleaner to see if it was running lean. The engine then bogged which makes me think it is pretty close to correct.

When I say it doesn't rev up I mean that you move the throttle and nothing happens for maybe 60 to 90 seconds. Not just that it is a little slow to get going. After it is hot the symptoms disappear. It is not terrible the way it is but something isn't right. Plus I like fooling with stuff so it's fun for me to see if I can get it working better. :D

Thanks for the ideas.

With that added info, I would say the throttle shaft, and governor are gummy from sitting. I would tollerate it for a month or so to see if it gets better. If not I would pull the side plate off of the governor and clean and oil the components. Don't get cleaner of scrapings into the engine. The throttle shaft is only accessable by carb removal. Be careful with the tang and slot as described above. Jim

If it works well/ correctly after being warmed up, look for condensation frozen in the governor area--& the throttle tube going to the carb.

Thanks everyone. I am going to go ahead and take the carb off. I'll get it all cleaned up and reassembled. I'll go ahead and clean and lube the governor and the throttle tube. Then we'll see what happens. I've looked at the governor and it didn't look gummed up or anything. I'll report back.

Here is a video I shot of it on my phone yesterday when we got it started. My daughter was helping and she was pretty excited to see it run! She is going to have to gain some weight before she can push the clutch in enough to drive it herself.

I had the same problem when i got my H. Id look at the governor. Take all the bolts out(while its not running) then move the throttle. Check the spring that holds the governor back. Mine was cracked and would just bend a little never allowing it to come up to full throttle. Good luck

Ooh... that's good information. I'll look at that when I have everything apart to clean it.

I had my H do something similar and found the intake manifold gaskets were leaking. Not sure if that is what yours is, but you can check by shooting carb spray around the mainfold while running and see if there is any change of speeds

"After the first time it runs fine". The engine has to warm up--even at 100 degrees in the summer. If it accelerates after it runs a few minutes it is fine. They all do that.

I had something similar happen to my 300 years ago.Take the cover off the governor and check the linkage.I can"t remember exactly what happened but there is a pin and slot linkage that can jump out of alignment. My father in law fixed mine.He had the same thing happen to his F-12 or M.The linkage never jumped before and never did it again.

There is a thingy that M&W(?) made that helped you push the clutch in. It was just a little 1-2" piece that fit in the rod. I think they sell a reproduction in OEM or Steiners or one of them.
