m timing question for CNKS who helped me out last night

last night I placed a post with questions about my M timing issue. cleaned all the contacts up and finally found some spark. I adjusted her like the book and CNKS told me to and tightened the dist down. I got her running/adjusted the carb but she was running a little rough. Question for the masters. If I loosened the dist while running and moved it to the sweet spot is that OK? Am I running the risk of overheating or burning valves. I did not have a second person to help me see if the spark falls between TDC and the second mark. Should I worry if she is running good now??

How you timed your M is how countless owners have successfully timed their tractors over MANY years.

If yours runs smooth, and it doesn't knock or flame out the exhaust under heavy load, I'd leave it where you've got it!

To echo the others, you'll likely be fine as long as you don't go overboard. Look for the sweet spot. Moving it one direction may improve things. Moving it further in that direction will not necessarily improve it more. There is an optimum in there that's found wiht a cpombination of ear, hand and experience.

If you haven't done much of it I'd suggest taking a marker and marking your starting point, in case you get lost.
