Farmall H restoration project tool box options

Considering options for tool boxes on my restoration project. Restoration Knobs sell 3 different tool boxes for an H. 1) A box I"ve only seen once before, the back attaches to the light bar and the front hangs from the steering shaft. I wonder it it is just metal on metal on the steering shaft and it wears quickly? 2) The box that mounts to the lightbar then 3) A box they describe as an under the seat box for early H"s and M"s. Any experience, pictures or suggestions? Were there ever any IH boxes that mounted to the side of the frame rails?

the light bar one was pretty common. i dont know about the one hanging on the steering shaft. another option, not exactly stock, but farmer approved is this style box. i have them on all my m's and h. i think they were originally off an old baler, they pop up at auctions often. metal box with a hinged lid and a woodbottom. sit nice next to the seat pedestal.

The dealers all had a selection of tool boxes that mounted on the frame or on the PTO shield. Some of those tool boxes had a place on the lid where the individual dealer could attach a small decal with HIS name, etc. The vast majority of the Hs and Ms around when I was growing up all had either the frame mounted tool box, or an owner inspired and adapted tool box that mounted on either the frame or on the rear of the tractor somewhere. These tool boxes were greatly favored because of the ease of access and also because they held MORE tools.

I never even knew about the light bar mounted tool boxes until just a few years ago. Apparently those were very impractical, and no one wanted one. My fathers H had a "Fordson" tool box mounted on the PTO shield, and I remember an M that had a "Case" tool box mounted in the same place. I think the Case tool box was salvaged from a Case, horsedrawn hay rake.

yup, i have down pressure on it , this m has a char lynn two way valve piped in to the belly pump. in the picture, the pins are removed from the top links so the hitch will float with the bush hog on it. by sliding the pins back in the hitch will lock in for down pressure. handy for back blading and also on the post hole digger.

I learned a lot from your picture, I see how you plumbed your Saginaw, mine doesn't have down pressure, how you mounted your hydraulic t's, I see where the wiring runs for the rear light and what the flexible conduit looks like. Also, I see the two holes in your lower steering pedestal and see how the foot level I bought on Ebay connects.
Your took box has IHC? I think that is the same logo as on the older style IH guages I just ordered. If it is a C, does it stand for Corporation?

My 48 H had a light bar - steering rod tool box on it when I got it. It wore a grove in the steering rod. I've removed it Now I need a frame mounted one. The tool box under the seat that I've seen were on the older seats with a pipe arm and were bolted to each side. They didn't hold much and stuff could bounce out.

its the old style logo, has the i-h inside a circle. is your saginaw set up for two way operation? if you have two way cylinders, you can do a little plumbing from the belly pump with a spool valve and get two way hydraulics. here is a pic of the char-lynn spool valve mounted under the gas tank. it has a control rod that runs up next to the belly pump control rod. what i did is weld a short nub off a 5/16 bolt to the belly control rod for a second stop to hold the pump full on and control with the spool valve. its not factory i-h and wont pass the correct police, but i really dont care. this is a working tractor, not a trailer queen!!

it also has a 12v generator conversion, key with push button starter off a solenoid.

Below is a picture of a toolbox my grandpa put on the side rail of his H. It sure seems like it would be the most convienient spot (other than on the platform as long as it wasn't in the way).

If you aren't worried about being "correct" then it would be easy to bolt any metal toolbox to the rails.

Good Luck!

The previous owner had already mounted this non-IH tool box to the frame, he probably bought it a few years ago at WalMart, I wouldn"t mind finding a more period correct box to mount to the frame rail.

I still need a box on the light bar or platform, somewhere within reach, to hold my sandwhich and soda .....

...Your took box has IHC? I think that is the same logo as on the older style IH guages I just ordered. If it is a C, does it stand for Corporation?
It is a C and it does stand for Corp. International Harvester Corporation Some people call the old logo the "Circle C" logo. Somebody called it a circle and that is partially correct, but it is a C.
Here is a little trivia that I just learned. International started switching the logo over when they bought out the Deering family. They started with the tractors bc they were the best selling and then finished buying the Deerings out on the seldom sold stuff. Therefore you will see the IHC longer on stuff like manure spreaders or quack diggers etc. It was a process that took about 5 years and started in 1946. *I wrote none of this data down, but it is accurate to the best of my knowledge. I also did not go double check it, but I trust the guy.

I personally would suggest the light bar mounted box. I bought a new reproduction and compared it side-by-side to an original IH box. The new one couldn't be more exact. It is made very well.

Seth, How about 6 more photos, and a little description of how you did that restoration. From what I see it is a number 1 and what a lot of the guys here would LIKE to do.
Paint looks a tad "dark red" but lighting and cameras can do that What paint did you use? And did you use a sealer on the primer and if so, what color sealer?

Gordo

I don't think I've ever seen one of those light bar boxes until I started reading this tractor stuff on the computer a few years ago. The most common ones for a farmall h or m around here mounted to the outer two transmission cover bolts at the rear above the pto shield. The top of the box was even with the cover.
