1953 Super H Ring and Pinion Backlash

Re-worked Super H transmission with new seals, bearings as needed, etc. I needed to replace leaky o-rings in bull pinion cages, so checked existing backlash on ring and pinion(0.022) and upon re-assembling, decided to reset backlash to spec 0.012. Now I have a whine in differential. I read all the good info in archives on this site and now realize backlash should have been set close to existing before disassembly. (Should have read before I did change) Your opinion: Would the difference of(0.010) cause a whine to develop?
Thanks,
Paul

yes, because now the load contact is not in the same spot as before.is the same shim amount still on the pinion? did you just reposition shims on the brg cage to change backlash?

Yup, always leave ring and pinion as is. This is not always easy to do if you are replacing loose worn bearings but is a goal to strive for. It would not be all that difficult to add a shim back onto right side to get back to original if you did not change any shims on pinion. You would not have to change shims on left side as a float on those ball bearings is fine. No need to pull cover, just pto, push right axle out to get bull gear out of the way.

To Rustred: I marked shims that came off each side so I can identify where they came from. I did remove one, maybe two shims from either one side or the other. I can put back as original but didn't want to go into transmission again. What I wasn't sure of was did the small difference of (0.010) make a difference in noise. From your comment and that of pete23, I believe I will need to re-adjust shims. Thanks.

actually .010 is a big diff. hard to say if going back to original will fix it now that the gears were run in a diff spot. difficult decision as over .020 is a lot of lash. might be best to just live with it now, at least the lash is within reason. there is no guarrantee now that you will get rid of the whine.
