W-4 Whine

Hello , My 41 W-4 has a whine in the rearend or transmission in 5th gear, is this anything to worry about? Thanks Bob

My I4 has a VERY loud whine in 5th. Been that way since I got and the previous owner said the same thing. I looked and couldnt see or find anything wrong, in fact it looked like new inside. I asked about this a few years ago on here, and the explanation made sence. Your sitting in a semi enclosed area. The sounds are being echoed around you making thesounds louder. Unless this is a new thing, I wouldnt worry too much about it.

that would be a differental whine , and the only cure is new crown and pinion gears. you will not see anything wrong with the gears either.

The crown and pinion gears are always to be replaced as a "set". If someone replaced either of those gears with a used gear, but did not replace the matching gear, the result will be a howling, whining rear end.
