How many of you guys with a later 450 have had problems with the splined steering worm gear and shaft? My shaft (from powersteering unit) to worm gear has the coupling splines wrecked. A previous owner put a pin through it. Lots of slop this way. I was considering 2 options for a repair:
1. I think I can locate a new coupling and shaft piece from an Industrial supply house, and cut off the bad and weld new parts on. This would make for an almost original repair. How durable? I don't know.
2. I can turn (lathe) the old coupling off, and weld the shaft to the worm gear. This would make it more like an older tractor. Durability? I doubt I'd ever break it.
So, on everybody's 53 year old tractors, How many have had their splined connections ruined? And what would be your opinion on a repair? Thanks, Andy
