I'm looking at a 756 for sale near me and need some info about possible problem areas to look for. Tractor seems to be in good shape overall with less than 3k hours. When stopping,it jerks just before stopping. Also, shifting from low to high the gears grind? Adjustment or possible expensive problem issues? Thanks in advance for your help.

There are no problem areas on these tractors. If there were, they would not still be running after 43 years. Everything is going to be worn, obviously.

The grinding may or may not be an expensive problem. Depends on if there is any adjustment left, and if adjustment fixes the problem or not...

Diesel or gas?

"Jerks before stopping..." WHAT jerks? How are you stopping? Coasting to a stop, or applying the brakes? Clutch pedal in or out? Neutral or in gear?

Guess that was a bit vague. Thanks for the response. It"s a diesel. Jerk occurs when stopping with clutch in, in gear and applying brakes. Not sure what is jerking, but my best guess is something related to brakes or transmission. Also, I didn"t try it during my test drive, but current owner say that when pushing TA lever forward there is often a few second delay prior to full lock up. Hope this helps-my first time dealing with anything newer tha Super M.

Are you shifting rolling,or fully stopped?Try being stopped-works better.Check the transmission brake,it may need to be adjusted. If the TA hesitates whike shifting, that may mean troulble is ahead.....Dont be nice and "feather" the TA,a fast, deliberate movement is better.

The 756 has hydraulic brakes and you need to feather them or you will lock them up easily, at leas that is the way ours is.

If you're throwing the TA lever ahead, and it's pausing several seconds, the TA is shot.

This isn't like a Super MTA, 400, 450, etc... where you can drive it forever if you just leave the TA alone. On these bigger tractors, if one side goes out the other side isn't far behind.

Does the tractor jerk when it's just coasting to a stop? If not, then it's definitely something with the brakes.

However, it sounds to me like this tractor will be more than you want to take on... You need a decent shop with some heavy duty lifts and special equipment (i.e. hydraulic pressure gauges) to replace the TA on something like this... It's a job best left to a professional, IMHO.

Thanks to all for the advice. You confirmed what I think I already knew-this one is probably not the one. Don't want to risk major repairs right away. Thanks

I would not agree that when one side of the TA fails the other side is soon to follow. That may be true if the failure is due to hydraulic failure but a failed sprag clutch will make the low side unusable but the high side may still run for thousands of hours without failing.

The way to check to see if the jerk is coming from the TA is to drive the tractor with the TA lever back and see if it still jerks. If it jerks only with the TA lever ahead there is a good chance the low side clutch is starting to roll over and is near the failure point.

The slow engagement in the forward position is usually caused by wear in the clutch pack assembly. The clutch piston has to travel farther to lock the clutch pack so it takes a little longer for it to engage.

Less than 3000 hours is pretty early for TA problems in a 756. They use the same TA as the 1456 and are usually fairly indestructable in the lower horse power tractors.

A weak MCV pump could also be causing a lot of the problems you are describing. A pressure/flow test of the hydraulic control system would be a good idea before purchasing this one.
