un vented gas cap

guy just told me that there was some sort of problem with un vented gas caps on international tractors and that at one time IH would trade you your unvented one for a vented one free. He said the vented ones were higher than the unvented ones but looked the same otherwise. He said this was dangerous and someone he knew was involved in a serious fire.

You folks ever heard of this?

I know you can go to IHGASCAP.COM and get a free gas cap by entering your tractor serial number to prove you're using them and not selling them.

I went to the site and entered all the info and got two gas caps for my Bn and A in about two weeks. I think you should check it out

They are not unvented, the problem was lack of maintenance on the owners part. The old gas caps have a small hole in the top that would plug with crap and the tank could build pressure. The other problem is fuel could splash out of the hole. The triple baffle gas caps prevent this "problem."

Well that's really something... I went to the site and there it is.

I guess I'll be getting a new gas cap.

thank you all very much... and thanks to the guy who told me about it.

The early caps had the vent on the underside. There is a gap between the top cover piece and the rest of the cap where it is crimped together. That is the vent.

Unvented caps were not used until the International utility models with the fuel tank between the fenders where the filler is on one side and the gauge sender is on the other. They vent through the sender. That system was used on the larger tractors starting with the 86 series when they switched to plastic tanks.
