tire chains on ice.

Never tried that trick, but I did weld boreum draft horse shoes onto a set of chains once. That worked well. It made them like bull chains on a log skidder. The nuts and bolts idea is neat though and doesn't require welding. Good thinking.

What is going to happen when the bolt turns over and you drive over it. I think it could punch a hole in the tire. JMO

yea i would use bolts that are just long enough to pass the thread of the nut by a thread or two, not long enough to damage tire no matter which way they might flip...would only do a couple dozen per wheel. not too expensive and a good way to get some bite i think??

I had a set of chains that were getting worn. I used a hard surface rod to build up the worn spots. They were good on ice for years later.

Bolts are not going to puncture the tire.

The only time they're going to have any pressure on them is when they're between the tread bar and the ground. The rubber there is way too thick to puncture. You may end up with some cuts or nicks in the tread bars, but that's normal.

When the chains fall down between the treads where the rubber is thinner, there will be no pressure on the bolts, so they will not puncture.
