What to offer on an M, and what is that thing on it?

I have dealt with this guy before and I trust him. He has the M in the pictures, engine is stuck and he says make an offer. He got it out of a barn where it has been sitting for 20 years or so. It looks to be in nice shape from the pictures except for being stuck. I am in northern NY state, if that is significant. I am wondering if anyone has any advice what would be a fair offer to make for it. Also, does anyone know what that hoist looking device is? Thank you very much.

zach, that is a nice looking m, straight tin, seems to be all there. i would be comfortable sending 500-800 for it. worst case senario, you could part it out to recoup your money (but i wouldnt) that frame work would be a dandy portable pumpkin catapult!!!!!!

I agree with glennster.

Since you are from No. NY, I wonder if the thing on the M is some sort of home made device for loading logs?

Are you looking to restore it, work it, or both? For a work tractor, mis-matched tires are not a crisis, if they will hold air. Tubes: $60-$75 each. Stuck engine, could be dry stuck, easy enough to free up. Bit of penetrating oil, and it is wasn't already wore out, it may run fine.

Tractor appears to be all there. neat design on the crane (or what appears to be crane).

You judge on your pocket book. If it were me, I would consider in the $600-$800 range. Top end would be $1000. I paid $1200 for a non-running SM in worse shape than that. I was happy to get it for that considering what SM's go for in my area (western Pa)

Thanks very much for the advice. I offered $700 and I'll see what happens. The pumpkin catapult idea sounds good if I grow more pumpkins this year than previously.

I'm sorry, those are all the pictures I have of it. I haven't been to see it yet in person. I see what you are saying, it does look like a hose. If I buy the tractor I'll find out for sure.

The hydraulic cylinder looks like one from an F-10 Farmhand loader. Appears to be a high lift device for smaller loads.

Sitting in a barn for 20 years?? Hot cold hot cold makes heavy castings sweat which makes water inside so what will exposed gears shafts and bearings look like?? Bud.

That offset hoist looks like one tippy SOB. Of course, you can't pick up much with with a cantilevered 3" pipe even if it was schedule 160.

Some of this farm engineered stuff is probably why farming ranks up there as a hazardous occupation. I wonder how the grill is still straight.

I would have attached a forklift or stacker mast to the front of the tractor. Better yet would be at the rear of the tractor. I have done both.

That might be true in colder climates but I have M that sat in open front pole shed in Alabama for 25 years and when I pulled frame cover there was not a trace of rust inside NONE.

That side attatchment looks like a bare root attatchment used by nurseries for harvesting small trees. Should have a rounded cuter spade on the bottom to dig in ground. Could be some parts missing. That attatchments would be neat at shows. Armand

Armand, that is exactly what it looks like. Maybe not the digger, but tranport and place in hole..........

For that purpose, that is a decent setup.

IMHO.

Zach,

Tell us what the attachment is if you find out.
Checking the thing more closely shows that the hydraulic cylinder pushes the upside down "U" shaped object down and pulls it back up again, but what for?

Thanks to everyone for the advice. He said he'd have to think about it, so I may hear something more about the tractor or not, I guess. There seem to be plenty of Ms out there, so I'm not really worried about it either way.
