Could use some advice please. I purchased a used Behien power steering unit and I pulled my tractor in the garage to install. I took the sheet metal off my tractor but I am not sure how to disasemblere the existing manual steering. It appears I need to take apart the steering at the universal joint, then remove the worm gear/rod. I have a I&T shop service manual and the owners manual, but I do not see a ref for removing the wormgear/rod. Help please.

Is this an M or an H? If so, remove the roll pin that connects the universal to the rear steering shaft. next, take of the cap at the front of the gear box and turn the front steering shaft out as needed. This should at least get ya started.

Its a 300, can't believe I did not post that. My apologies. I'll try tomorrow what you outlined, thanks

Yes, it's pretty much that simple.

Pin, cap, and roll the front shaft out.

To get the rear shaft, you need to remove the steering wheel.

I looked at a parts breakdown last night. Do I understand correctly I remove a nut off the front steering unit and the wormgear/shaft comes out the front? Hope that makes sense.

What a mess. I finally got the worm gear/shaft out (thanks for the advice) only to find someone welded the the worm gear shaft to the steering knuckle. I assume they lost the key that holds it on place and merely welded it. So, I took my cut off wheel and cut the shaft, removed it from the main front steering gear, then removed the U-Joint and carefully cut around the weld to save the steering knuckle. So I guess I'll get a new U-Joint, mount the power steering and see how it goes back together. While it is apart I believe I will rebuild the carb, have the radiator looked at it appears to be leaking and possibly install and new intake/exhaust gasket. Thanks for the advice on the steering. Appreciate this forum.

No problem. Sorry to hear the bad news of past "repairs" done by someone before you. Good luck!

My Steering U-Joint on the 300 takes keys. I see on the parts list form Y-Tractor they only sell a replacement steering u-joint for "pinned" shafts. Has anyone else run into this or is the answer to get my shafts drilled to include the power steering shafts?
