Is there any place other than a SN/ plate to identify a M?

What are you trying to identify? Just the year or what?

If you can find the engine serial # stamped in the block down below the front spark, can probably tell you the month it was put in a tractor. That will tell the month tractor was built, provided its the original engine. If its a late one may be able to tell what the tractor serial # was.
