I am working on a friends C whose PTO died. I got it apart and it is apparently not the first time it has broken. Some previous owner welded the PTO gear to the PTO stub shaft. That weld has failed...but the gear doesn't want to come off the shaft. Also please note the hammer dents in the gear itself, I didn't do that!!!

Is there any reason I cannot push the shaft(with the gear) from the housing from the outside??

If he can't afford a replacement shaft and gear thoughts on re-welding it???

Thank you in advance

Hi Paul,

I am afraid it isn't going to be that easy. There will be another gear on that same shaft on the inside. That means you will have to remove the top cover in order to get at it. There is a nut and locking washer if my memory serves me right.

If I understand teh schematic the only thing on the shaft is the gear and a woodruff key. Am I missing something??

The gear is coupled to the shaft with a woodruf key.
There is a diameter change from what I can see (caseih.com search for parts)
I believe it must come out the rear. A ball bearing, and a bushing are on the other side.
The woodruf key is probably snagging in the hub of the gear.
As far as welding it. That may be the only way to make what you have work at all. putting it in a lathe large enough to turn the shaft while letting the housing float, might allow the removal of the existing weld, forming a 3/8 deep X 3/wide groove at the point the shaft fits the gear hub. A good welder with 7018 or 100 series rod could make it work. No guarantees. (but there weren't guarantees on the original weld either. It probably had shrink cracks in it from just after it cooled. Good luck. Jim
An attempt to get to the parts page. Jim

The shaft comes out the back, the side opposite the gear. There is a shoulder on the shaft that rests against the outside bearing inner race and won't let the shaft come out towart the gear side. There are two bearings on the shaft, one behind the oil seal on the outside and another on the inside behind the gear. If you want to get the shaft out, you will have to remove the weld to where you can get the gear off. The gear and woodruff key have to come off to get the shaft out. You can't drive the shaft out through the gear, as the woodruff key will hit the housing and prevent driving the shaft out. The gear is supposed to be retained on the shaft with a heavy washer and a bolt in the end of the shaft. I think I see part of a broken off bolt in the center of the weld in your photo. If I had your situation, I would try to find a complete PTO unit at a salvage yard and scrap the one you have now.

Thank you all

I am recommending to him to get a replacement shaft and gear. I will grind off the weld and get her apart...

I think I have a New Old Stock gear I could sell you reasonable. I will need to check to make sure I have it. Send me an E mail if you are interested and I will verify I still have it and give you a price. I used to have some PTO shafts as well, but I think all those are gone.
